How on earth did they cut this thing like that? This is one piece of wood, not sure how you can do this spinning it on a lathe.

Gotta be several pieces of wood glued together.
And lathes? I stay away from that particular piece of equipment. I would likely kill myself if I had one. I do a good enough job almost killing myself with the tools I have now.

I would think they would use green wet wood and twist it around an object and let it dry, then attach them somehow. If you gently remove the paint you might be able to figure it out, or not.

To make a twist or spiral, the line or distance between thread crests is laid out. A string or tape can be used to guide a pencil mark. A saw is used to score the pencil mark to make it easier for the chisel to follow.
The lathe is turned by hand because the thread is too fast to follow with the machine running. The space between the thread is being cut.
To make a double spiral a second cut is made between what the first cut has left and enough space has to be left on the land for the second thread. the spiral has to be very fast
For modern production work a steel worm could be used to follow the spiral at fast speed along with shaped cutter.
In the picture if you look at the left side it becomes a right hand thread.

I believe there are setups using both a router and a lathe that will make that twist. Way beyond my pay grade however.

Nevermind, Franco beat me to it. It is pretty cool to watch though.

I'm thinking this is more on the lines, very cool but I'm not patient enough
