So tomorrow I have a company coming to talk about improving my "home comfort". In my home inspection I was told I have only like 5" or 6" of cellulose in the attic. Looks like for NY it should be 15"-19". So talking with this company they want to come look at stuff. I told the lady I was talking to that my interest was in getting the attic up to par. So she said attic insulating runs about $8000.
So my question is what can I expect to save in heating cost by doing so? I'm thinking 20% at best. I think that might even be high. So if I burn 5 ton of coal per year I might save 1 ton per. So right now I'm paying $285 per ton.
$8000 divided by 285 equals 28 years.
Seems like I bad investment. How will they justify it?

Depends on how accessible the space is and what they use to insulate with...
Cellulose is inexpensive and easy to do if you have headroom in the attic...
Spray foam gets costly but seals infiltration...
If they gotta rip sheetrock...
8K seems over the top in any case...

Just the attic will not save 20 %. If the heat can't get out the top, it just flows out the walls and windows.
$8000 should fill the entire house.

Shawn,
Thats ridiculous! Was that from Snug Planet? If you can get into the attic it should be $2000 tops! Call "The Insulation man" in Binghamton.

Go to HD, buy $500 worth of R-30, bring it home in your pick-up, and tell the grandkids you'll give them $100 bucks each to roll it out in the attic. (Just don't cover the soffit vents. )

Joeq's comment has excellent value.joeq wrote:Go to HD, buy $500 worth of R-30, bring it home in your pick-up, and tell the grandkids you'll give them $100 bucks each to roll it out in the attic. (Just don't cover the soffit vents. )
Suggest unfaced rolled perpendicular to joints to make it easier to walk up there since you can find joints easier.. Wear a mask.
You will notice a difference plus less heat infiltration into attic suggests lower ice dam potential.

They have have rafter vents for this. It's leaves a tunnel between the vent and the attic, then you can get the insulation right up against it.joeq wrote:Go to HD, buy $500 worth of R-30, bring it home in your pick-up, and tell the grandkids you'll give them $100 bucks each to roll it out in the attic. Make sure you buy a few to try them out, the roof on house is on 24 inch centers. with ceiling joists on 16 inch centers they were very difficult to install so I gave up on them. The roof has a low pitch so it's difficult space to work in to begin with, everyone had to be custom fit and by the time I was done cutting there was very little structure left in it. They are pretty flimsy to begin with.
We only put in R-19, once I get everything squared away such as reinforcing the 24 inch centers on the roof rafters we may roll out another layer of R-19 crossways.
