sent my friends 95 ranger to the cat food can factory a few weeks ago, it had over 400,000 miles on the original engine, he hardly ever had the oil changed, sometimes it would be every 25,000 mi.

cat food can factory

Do you remember if your friend's '95 Ranger had the German Ford pushrod V-6 or the 4 banger? Impressive lifespan on little love. My step daughter and hub bought a new manual trans Honda Accord in about 2008. Somehow ran it 12 years and 250k mi. Brakes only got done when nothing was left of pads and rotors. Clutches until they were left on the road. I'd bet my last hat that that car didn't have more than 8 oil changes in its life. Also never washed once.

It was the 4.0 ohv v6, one of the best v6's ford ever produced. they put overhead cams on this engine starting in 2001 with rangers and 1997 with explorers and ruined the thing.
Only thing I ever replaced on the 95 ranger engine engine was the Water pump at 126,000 miles in 2006, that was right after he got it. It had a couple tune ups and a new coil pack maybe 2, had to replace the cam sensor once, the valve covers and oil pan were never off the engine.
the automatic transmission went at around 250,000 and we converted it to a 5 speed manual for him.

Thanks for the info. Terrific service life. I suspected it was the V-6. I didn't know they were up to the 4 Lt by then. I had always heard that the OHC models were trouble. I knew a couple of guys that had the older 2.8 or 2.9 models and had blown head gaskets. Some shops would mill the heads and forget to mill the same off the intake manifold mounting surfaces. Instant intake leak.

My older model Ranger broke a tie rod while on the road. Fixed it right on the side of the road. And starter went bad. That took 10 min. Those old Rangers were easy to work on.

All those pint sized mini pickups were very popular from all brands. Ever time they discontinue one they wind up bringing them back after a few years. Not surprised that ford cant make enough of the new Maverick trucks mini trucks to keep up with demand. But also because it gets crazy good MPG.

The small trucks were discontinued due to fuel economy mandates. Larger trucks did not have to meet the same fuel economy standards, so that is what we got. Hopefully with the new power trains we see more of the small trucks return.

They are not pint sized anymore though. The Midsize trucks are just as tall as the full size just narrower. I figured it was a safety thing, When i'm driving my 86 toyota pickup my left foot is only a piece of sheetmetal away from the tire and maybe 4"

Someone needs to come out with a mini truck with at least a 6 foot bed.

There are rumors. Chevy. El. Camino.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_El_Camino

If it happens it will be fun to see how chevy completely screws the pooch with it.

I never went in for one cuz the MPG was not really much better with less room all around so why go in for a smaller truck. Close to the same price as full sized truck too.

My BIL has a late model Colorado 4wd that looks bigger than an 80's full size. If someone made small 80's type rwd compact trucks, single cab, 6 ft bed and sold them at a decent price, they couldn't make them fast enough. Especially if they had 4 bangers that couldn't be worn out like the Toyota 22R or the Nissan KA24. The '88 Ranger 4 banger 2wd drive, single cab, 5 speed, 7 ft. bed truck I had did 22 mpg local and 26 highway. My '88 D150 single cab SB 318 did 13, the Silverado 4.8 single cab LB did 16, and my D150 single cab SB, slant 6, does 16.

But no one will make them because they have a long line for $58k trucks that are worth $30k. And that's the "mid-sized." "Boat drinks", as the mobsters supposedly say.

Thats right , the Maverick only has a 4 ft bed and they still cant make them fast enough.
