GM is going to be spending 13 times more to develop the next generation of ICE V8 than they will on EVs.

I guess they didn't get BB's memo about the future. :D

Perhaps the US should not have let china buy up the worlds lithium supply if they were going "all in" on EVs. Since no one in(US) Govt can seem to think that far ahead. Better just improve what we use already in that case.

1.4l, 1.3l,1.2l all small engines with turbos. If you ask me, they are junk. Sure they tac out when floored, make lots of noise, barely enough power to merge. 3 cylinder naturally unbalanced so they have to go to tricks to make it stop shaking. Same with V6. Gas mileage sucks because you have to run rich when the turbo is in boost otherwise it will cause engine damage. Give me a regular 4 cyl or 8 cyl any day.

Wife's 2020 Ford Escape had the 1.5 L 3 cylinder Ecoboost engine. Ran quiet, smooth, and got very good gas milage. Had more than enough power for passing and merging. Same for our 2020 Edge with the 2L Ecoboost that we traded the Escape in for.

Still have the escape? Yes, the 1.5 is a 3 cyl and it replaced the 1.5 that was a 4 cyl. We have a 2017 with the 1.5l 4 cyl. I don't particularly like it, it revs up and slightly throws you back in the seat but then it's over, runs out of steam. The gas mileage is what we got 20 years ago with a real 4wd with a frame and actual high and low range. The 3 cyl replaces the 4 cyl because of the thinwall casting and were known to blow head gaskets and crack blocks. The 2.0 has a lot more HP but i cab bet the mpg is 20.

I'm not a GM person, be sure to change your timing belt at 40k on your little Aveo or it will be in the junkyard with the rest of them.

It is a gamble that GM must think is worth it, and I happen to agree. Time will tell.

As for the turbo engine comments, the 3.5 Ecoboost in our Expedition has more low end torque than the V8 in my Ram, and gets way better fuel economy. I still like traditional V8s, but the Ecoboost has made a believer out of me. As for longevity, our last Ecoboost had 130K on it and ran perfect when the body started to lose the war to road salt.

We had the 1.4 in our 2011 Escape and when it was nearing 100,000 miles, we traded it in for the 2020 Escape new. Then, a few months ago, we traded in 2020 Escape for a very low milage 2020 Edge - mostly because getting old and arthritic we needed something easier to get in and out of than the Escape.

Otherwise, both Escapes ran great and not one problem with the engines. And gas milage highway was in the low 30s for both.

Making an electric drive motor for EVs is very simple, I'm sure any of us could make an electric motor easily enough. ICEs require tooling etc. More more complicated and involved.

Maybe soon we'll have 3d printers available to the masses that can do steel. That would be fun then

I have a 2015 GMC with a V-6 .I wanted an 8 but most of the smaller GM trucks have this 4.3 V-6. It has about 300 HP
gets super great MPG as high as 27hwy and more power than ill ever need. Its super smooth and quiet too,iv already tried to start it when it was already running quiet. I had the old version (1993) of this truck and it was only 160 HP in 1993. Glad i didnt get the 8 in the newer one.

Don't believe any of those HP numbers. You can not tell me a little 1.5l with turbo has 30 more HP than my old 351M. Sorry, lies. Maybe a tiny HP peak on the power curve, no way they have any torque. If you have ever driven a Chevy with a 300HP 350 V8, anything claiming 300hp is not even close. As to the 2011 Escape, no such engine back then, they were only 2.5 4cyl and a 3.0 v6. We had a 2010 xls with a 2.5 stick shift, ran great just it was rusting away a lot sooner than if should have. Sold it 5 years ago and the guy still drives it daily, i guess he patched the rust or is just ignoring it.

It's all about the vehicle manf. saving money and putting out advertising trying to make you believe there is more HP and better gas mileage. I worked for a major manf and believe me, if they can save 2 cents on a cheaper part they do it. They lie about HP and MPG numbers, when they get caught they suddenly revise the numbers, more than once i have seen a later model car have lower MPG estimates when it's the exact same car just newer.

HP numbers come from an industry standard test. So I believe the numbers are obtained from the test.

Lawnmowers were all in the courts about their HP numbers. Court got all huffy saying the test was not appropriate. Lawyers got $$$$$ consumers got $.

What's worse today is the MPGe values on EVs .. totally misleading. Here the consumer needs to re-calculate based on local costs of gas and electricity. 100% fraud saying EV gets 250 MPGe.
