The funny thing about European regs is they favored diesel over gas because of the lower CO2 emissions. Crazy as it is eating diesel PM was preferable. I would strongly suspect European regulators had a blind eye towards the diesel emissions as long as they were complying with the CO2 regs. US regulations favor gas which does not produce anywhere near the emissions of diesel that can have a direct affect on your health but the CO2 is higher. That is why small diesels are nearly non existent here in the US.

my son bought a golf tdi diesel after the test rigging scheme was settled and the cars that sat for a while were sold. He got a deal , and he's a competent mechanic and figures he got some of the last vw diesel tdi in the US.
