Don, have you changed the rest of the drivetrain fluids in the car?
Haven't done the trans or the rear.

The transmission is usually the weak link. Rear axle is pretty tough but if you are looking for another 100k out of it I would change the oil.

The 'Ol Crown Vic went through inspection with no problems!
The AC problem turned out to be a leaking compressor. Not too big of a deal, new compressor and some freon.

Also, we loaded the 87 octane tune to see how that works out. First tank full we got 19.5 MPG. 1 MPG better than the 91 octane tune. Going up hills with light throtle pressure, it holds 4th gear and torque converter lockup easier than with the 91 octane tune. Other than that, it's hard to tell the difference.

Now I can run it on the cheap stuff!

Wow! I had to replace the Y pipe and cats on my 1999 GMC because I broke the pipe when I was working on the exhaust. That wasn't cheap but I don't remember it being that expensive. It was a few years ago though.

I hope that fixes your "Half-A-Truck" Fred!

Fred, you can fix “low catalyst efficiency” with a $25 kit. I have done it on two different vehicles. Basically it changes the signal going back to the computer.

Rob, I tried an additive "cat-clean" --put extensions on the lower 02 sensors--all emmision sensors are brand new--kinda at a loss--HOPEFULLY this cat set up will do the trick--if not--I'll get back for specifics!!!! :)

Another year goes by...

Got the 'Ol Crown Victoria inspected last Friday so it's time for an update!

We are moving ahead with the suspension upgrades that we talked about 2 years ago, finally.

We got all the suspension parts through ADTR.net. KYB struts/shocks, front/rear sway bars, rear control arms, Watts link arms and an ARP hardened Watts link bolt.

One of the biggest handling improvements you can make to one of these cars is the rear control arms and Watts link arms. I got a set of Massive Speed arms that are WAY stronger than the Wimpy, Squeaky, pressed original arms.

Still waiting for the sway bars to arrive. Maybe this will be next weekends project.

I also ordered a new set of head light housings and LED lights. Still waiting for the housings but I put one of the LEDs in the passenger side just to see how it would go.

Seems to work good but I am not impressed with how they fit. They don't fit in the stock, twist lock holder. The only thing that holds them in place is the O-ring. Not a good mounting solution. :annoyed:

Roll the video!

I've never seen a factory stick shift Crown Vic but I know people convert them. There are quite a few Youtube videos of them.

IT IS CROWN VICTORIA WEEKEND!!!

This is a long weekend for me so we are going to tackle these upgrades. Last night I cleaned up the garage and moved stuff around so the big white car would fit in there.

It's a little tight but it fits! This thing is just a little bigger than the 944.

The objective is to get all these parts on there in the next 2 days.

I also got new tires for it. These are a very cost effective way to get better grip than our old, dry, non-sticky tires.

Dropped them off at the shop first thing this morning.

Gotta put white-wall tires on.

Rookie mistake.

End of day 1. We didn't get nearly as far as I had hoped.

We'll see how far we get on day 2.
20230901_175605.jpg
.JPG | 270KB | 20230901_175605.jpg
Everything was going smoothly until I tried to remove the upper ball joint nut. These things are normally a little challenging but this one decided to fight me on the last 6 threads.
20230901_175811.jpg
.JPG | 204KB | 20230901_175811.jpg
Then we were running smoothly again until I tried to remove the bottom strut bolt. The bolt was rusted to the bushing sleeve making it impossible to push it out.

I used every implement of destruction I have on this one and it took a long time.
20230901_175632.jpg
.JPG | 275.7KB | 20230901_175632.jpg
I ended up cutting the bottom of the strut open and prying the rubber loose to get the strut out. Then cutting the bolt into a few pieces to get it out.
20230901_175720.jpg
.JPG | 358.7KB | 20230901_175720.jpg
To end the evening I took the strut apart, mounted the old spring on the new strut and got it stuffed back in the car.

Tires are mounted, balanced and ready to go.
20230901_191856.jpg
.JPG | 245KB | 20230901_191856.jpg
I hope to get a lot more done today. :D

Yah, the bottom strut bolt on the other side didn't obey either.

But at least I knew how to deal with it. It still took 2 hours though. I added the saws-all to the implements of destruction.

I didn't have to spend time cutting through the bottom of the strut bushing this time. Just cut the bolt out.
20230902_140507.jpg
.JPG | 183.4KB | 20230902_140507.jpg
Compressed the spring and moved it over to the new strut.
20230902_140522.jpg
.JPG | 247.2KB | 20230902_140522.jpg
Nailed it all back together, torqued everything down, put the wheels and tires on.

Next will be the rear control arms, Watts link, shocks and sway bar.

There will be a delay though. I have had some lower back problems this week and just as it was getting better, I started this project. Fighting with the front has greatly increased the amount of pain I am in so we are going to give it a rest for a day or 2. :D
