It's amazing how well many of the heavier GM fwd cars did on highway mpg. My dad ran an '88 Olds 88 from new to about 12 years, 160k mi. That had the pre 3800, 3.8. Roller cam and I believe it had MPFI. I went on a couple of long fishing road trips with him and you could count on 30 mpg. I had a Olds Intrigue with the odd 3.5 LX-5 engine. DOHC and a good bit more power than the 3800. On road trips and zero ethanol gas It also did 30 mpg all day at 70. Unfortunately, it had the same design as the Caddy Northstar V8 along with the terribly undersized head bolts. One deep water puddle and the all alloy engine sprang some head bolts.

Drives like a truck though with those 20” rims. That was a big disappointment. I was expecting Park Avenue ride.
I am not sure GM makes anything today that would have the ride of a Park Avenue.

I replaced the water pump a couple days ago. It wasn't bad I did need a strap wrench to hold the pulley but, I had one. I looked for the elbows but couldn't find them. It has coolant pipes that bolt into the intake manifold and block. The new pump is a ACDelco 252-693 the impeller is cast iron. The old one had a sheet metal impeller. I have changed the oil and filter again this time I used 5w30 full synthetic rural king brand, they didn't have any 10w30 weight oil.
The oil pressure light still flashes on like before, I keep forgetting to get a gauge.

Just looked it up, that is series 1 engine and different design. On series 2 and 3 the alternator is to back of the engine, you have a pulley there. The bracket on 2 and 3 series has passage for the coolant for the heater core. There is two hoses that come off the back that go to heater. The elbows are below that bracket and go directly into the block below the manifold. The one elbow you can see if you know where to look but the other one is hidden. Check below that bracket holding that back pulley.
Perhaps you don't have them on that engine or they are somewhere else.
