A lot of people are leaving Cali as it is, now. With their years of electrical power shortages, there'll be even more reason to, " get their butts in gear" to move to other States.

Did they bother to think about how they would generate all the power needed? Their grid is already inadequate.

Reminds me of Vermont closing their one and only nuclear power plant. It became a political issue because the tree huggers don't like nuclear power, so they closed it and had to start buying power generated in others states...at a high price. If you asked the anti-nuke people how the replacement power was generated you got a blank stare.

I doubt with Cali's financial history, she'd find many takers.

California's growth rate has dropped to .47%...Why would anyone move there with all of the natural disasters, failing electrical grid and the population in general.

Good. Yet another fantastic reason to avoid the steaming pile of dog excrement that is the state of California. We just need to build a fence around it at some point so they are all contained.

Something about the cart being in front of the horse they said.

I have many cousins out there and they think it is wonderful. Just like the city dwellers on the East coast think everyone outside the city is only in existence because they are awesome, the Californians think they pay to much in taxes and we don't give it back hence they are broke. It is "their" fault. The mythical others. That is an idea learned from the education system and their politicians.

Inadequate, severely underfunded and one the highest electric rates in the country. The profit margin and rates are set by the state. You can only draw one conclusion about the maintenance issues in CA, regulators let it slide to help hide the escalating cost of power that would of required rate increases.

They don't have the money to fix what they have now, where are they are going to get it to add power production and the new infrastructure required to support it?

One of their problems is they are heavily dependent on income tax and other taxes that are variable. Property taxes there are very low by law, the thing about property taxes is they are what they are every year. Since the taxes they are utilizing are dependent on robust economy when the virus hit they went instantly from projected surplus to severe deficit. This is compounded by the massive debt burden, the pensions investments are also making less revenue increasing the states obligation. While tax revenues are dropping the states obligations are increasing.

Same problem exists in many states with these pensions to one degree or another. CA is only out at the forefront because of the source of their revenue.

They think that it's all going to be generated by wind with a 20% capacity factor, and solar at 20 watts per square foot with somewhere between 2 and 5 solar hours per day

All these green energy schemes are just omissions, half truths and creative bookkeeping. It's like asking a 40 something blonde in spandex leopard pants, wearing big hoop earrings and too much eye makeup what her body count is.

It's estimated CA will need 25% more electric to meet the demand when this happens. They expect this bill will force the grid to be upgraded and fixed. Someone still has to foot the bill now, to hope to see profits in the future. That plan is still a mystery. Companies today work on today's numbers, not what they might see in 15 years. It would be irresponsible to investors for a company to operate at a loss for any amount of time. The price for electric is set by the regulator, the only way to ensure profit for your investors is to close the power plant if it's not meeting the $/MwH numbers, or have the govt subsidize to make up the difference.

And you need generation, reliable 24/7 generation. We will never be able to increase capacity for a 25% increase using just wind and solar in this amount of time.

They also expect adding all these electric cars will help to "fix" the grid by creating mass storage capability for the grid. Basically use your car to feed the grid when demand is high. Nice theory, but now you won't have electric or a charged car. Not to mention the added wear on your cars batteries to discharge and feed the grid.

Interesting side effect, Say there is a tree down on your street cutting the power. Your car is now powering your neighborhood! And making it even more difficult for lineworkers to make timely repairs.
