Electric Trucks Towing Capacity
We have to look at towing capacity.... ICE vs Electric....
Looks like no contest....12,000# vs 300,000#....

"Musk responded “12,000 lbs!? How puny. Do you construct children’s toys?”
"Musk has previously claimed Tesla’s electric truck will have “crazy torque” and be able to tow 300,000 pounds."

BB, still dreaming I see. Do you remember the old Shell Fire and Ice oil ads of Hyundai pulling a 100 ton crane? It's not what you pull it's can you stop and turn etc. Musk sounds desperate and you are sounding gullible.

I dont know CN, Ive seen people pull trains with their teeth.... maybe if that 300,000 pound load has a downhill road to roll on it can pull it, then get mowed over on the bottom of the hill by the load.... but it could be claimed he moved the load, so a true statement could be made about it, treated as fact of course, like BB's links.
Maybe these are the same Hyundai's that keep burning up
and are being recalled ....

At least you can put out a gasoline fire, try that with lithium. Also, lithium becomes more toxic when you hit it with water

Good thing there isn't any risk of impact on 300,000 lb vehicles
No preview? Okay, it's a video of crushing batteries and their reactions. (I despise blind links)

OK again BB Its fairly easy to move 300,000 LBS (easier with toque of DC then then a ICE ) but how are you going to stop that much weight with a pickup??BigBarney wrote: ↑Fri. Mar. 29, 2019 11:17 amWe have to look at towing capacity.... ICE vs Electric....

Just look at mining haul trucks, diesel/electric and much heaver then Musk's fantasy pickup trucks!!!

Even this old Unimog could be fitted with railway wheels and as much rated to pull 300t by Mercedes with less than 100HP. Boringly, another very old idea wearing new clothes. However, I would buy a Unimog if I had that much spare cash - great toy. Much more fun than an EV, however, a top speed of 50mph is a concern.

Yeah after rapid changing in technology the towing power also increasing so that at one time more load can be carried services also adding more towing powered truck into their fleet to get an extra advantage over other companies.

In some respects stopping a bigger load (I am not saying 300,000 pounds here) is easier with an electric vehicle because they have electric motors, so like a locomotive, they can have dynamic braking.
I am not sure what the point of no return is. RG LeTourneau deduced a way for mining trucks to haul more capacity than what they weigh, so Musk is not entirely out of his tree. He just needs to learn a little about tractive effort, wheel slip, cohesion of friction on wheels and various surfaces, etc to get back down to earth.

But, the bigger question has not been asked.
How much can an electric truck pull when it is super cold? As all those electric car people found out in Chicago last year when there was that super cold snap, their mileage per battery charge went drastically down.
There is quite a bit of danger when you have tractor trailer trucks stopped in the middle of the highway, and a massive truck parked next to it with a diesel generator on the back, pumping up the battery again.
Now add hundreds of trucks stranded on American Highways during a cold snap.
Everyone thinks that a driver could just pull over when their battery is nearing depletion, but that will not be the case. When a cold snap comes, inevitably a driver will die on the highway, which will make a traffic jam, which will cause more electric cars and trucks to die, which will cause more traffic jams, which will cause more cars and trucks to fail....and so it goes.

You are forgetting magic NS. All this application of common sense is fine, but Elon has some magic just for this occasion. He is doling it out slowly however.....like selling computers and cell phones....just improve them enough to sell the latest greatest and as soon a saturation occurs, slip out the new and improved version with some slick advertising....

I understand, I was just mentioning how people sometimes forget that battery packs can be depleted in cold weather,
I saw a photo last year of a young couple and their electric car, in the middle of the highway, with an AAA truck towing a generator, charging it back up again...in the center of the highway!
That photo exists, but I could not find it to post on here unfortunately, but I did look.
