Volvo's, well known for being a safe car, now probably it is the best safe.

I can't get in the unlocked glove box, neither can my mechanic nor the nearby volvo dealer and it seems to happen to numerous volvo's as a online search suggests. It appears someone designed a fail safe design in the 1998 vintage S70. We've tried prying it with a breaker bar and short of pulling apart the entire dash board it won't budge. Hell, the door barely bends. I tried high powered magnets hoping to dislodge something but got no where.

The volvo dealer fortunately has a similar model in for repair but there is no way to access the locking/latching mechanism. The lock and opener is on the left side and the latch is dead center near the top. Unless someone here has a great idea for gaining entry I either have to drill out a 1" hole near the latch and that might not work or it's buzz saw time as a punch out won't work either. I just have no idea how to dress up the missing glove box. I wanted to sell the car as its low mileage and near mint condition. I'd let it alone but there are some important papers in the glove box. Any ideas???

Sounds like a predicament. Is your box like the one in this video?

Here's another one.

and another.

If you have to do some drilling, there seems to be a lot of S70 glove box doors on ebay. Also a liner or two.

I think I'll try the hack saw first. It seem the least destructive. Looking at the guts, I'm betting the vertical spring sprung as I can see the locking mechanism move the box to engage.

Out of the blue my neighbor bought it for $2300 and she is an attorney so if she gets asked to open it she knows the law better then I ever will. Never got the box opened - just couldn't bring myself to destroy such a well kept car.
