July's project.

Dad's 1992 TRX300 has been parked in the barn for a few years, and I decided it was time to get it ready for action.

Thankfully dad treated the gas, and there was no varnish to deal with. Just had to put fresh gas in and it fired up. Unfortunately the mice did a job on the wiring harness and I had to do some repairs to get the lights working...but it could have been a lot worse.

Needed two new CV axles in the front, and it had a rear axle bearing growling. Once I got the axle out I saw that it had been running loose, and had ruined the splines. eBay to the rescue. Got a new axle and KOYO bearing kit for $100. Finished assembly last night and took it out for a ride. Runs and drives great.

It still runs like it is new. Impressive for something 26 years old.

Update on the old Honda.

There must have been some crap in the gas tank that I could not see. After a few months of use I started having issues with the float/needle sticking open, and gas flooding the carb. Took the carb apart and was pleased to not find any vanish, but did find a chunk of something in the needle/seat. Decided as long as I had the carb off to give it a complete rebuild, and to also clean the gas tank really well.

Also a good time to upgrade the spongy factory fuel line. I wondered if it was a piece of rubber that got caught in the needle/seat.

I think you mean ethanol? I have never added methanol to the fuel, but it did see regular pump gas for the last few months.

I ordered some Tygon fuel line to replace the existing one.

I try to squeeze in an inline fuel filter if I can.

I will try to sneak in one of those small Brigg's filters, but the line is pretty short.

Some chainsaw and snow blower engine fuel lines have a slip-on fuel filter that goes on the end of too-short fuel lines and sits down inside the tank, if you can get to it ??? And the larger ones look big enough to have enough fuel flow.

Neat machines. My late hunting partner had the same model in the same color. Used it for years to get around the hilly 300 acres we hunted in South Plymouth NY. It could zip around the meadows with the two of us, his small dog, and all our gear on board. Then it went to his Grandson when he passed away.

Great machine. I have one in a horse stall that was beaten almost to death when I bought it for no money many moons ago. I would like to say to it had an exotic life roaming hundreds of acres on hunting safaris but instead it ran manure to the back of the property in all sorts of c rappy conditions dragging a dump trailer filled with horse poop.... poor thing. I got another great deal on a Honda Foreman Rubicon 500 and that was a better power match. The 300 was parked and there it has stayed. It's now covered in bird poop and I feel sorry for it. Luckily, I have now three offers to totally restore it from freddy, Sunny and Rob... I am evaluating my options.

Those darned rubber lines just don't last forever anymore with ethanol helping their demise. The last ones I pulled from a weed eater literally crumbled in my fingers. Still I can't convince my fellow employees to not use that crap.

I ordered a twin pack of filters from ebay - they are intended for gravity feed applications, and are small enough that I should be able to install one between the tank and carb.

Does yours look as good as mine? Spider webs come at no extra charge. You have inspired me to have a go at it.

That will clean up nice. Hopefully the mice haven't tasted the wiring.

Carb kit arrived yesterday. Decided to check Youtube for any tips on reassembly, and found a complete tutorial. Part 2 of the series is what I was interested in, but he also shows the carb removal, install, and adjustments. Lots of other TRX300 videos also.
