Check to see if there's voltage at the spark plugs when it's running with the key off. You might have a short in the ignition system that's bypassing the switch.
A lot of 80's motors were designed to run lean. Some get too hot and chug on when shut off. Check plug color to see if it's very light tan, which might mean it's running even leaner than it should now. That can make it run hot enough to cause hot spots in the combustion chamber and ignite the air/fuel with the ignition system off.
Has it got the correct spark plugs in it ? Again, if they are too high a heat range they can act like glow plugs in a lean running motor.
Is it burning oil ? That can carbon up the combustion chambers. Then the carbon deposits can act like a glow plug. Are the plugs black with an oily deposit?

Yes, it is a word.
Ok, then I'd check for voltage in the plug wires by pulling off the center wire out of the distributor cap (or coil) and see if that shuts off the engine. If it does then you know there is a short somewhere that is letting voltage get to the coil without going through the ignition switch.
See if there is a relay to feed power to the ignition system. The relay may be stuck.

Then pull a wire off a plug, stick a screw drive in the wire boot and holding it near engine compartment metal, see if it will jump a spark to ground when the engine is still running with the key off.

If you mean stater solenoid, that shouldn't have any effect on ignition running.
I'd stick with checking to see if the ignition system is continuing to function with the key off.
If the ignition is off when the key is off, then I'd suspect hot spots in the combustion chamber.
Are there any times that it does shut off with the key ? How are you getting it to stop when it won't key off ?

If it gets where you cant figure it out and dont want to pay someone you can get one of those battery cables with an on/off on them. PITA lifting and shutting the hood but it works as long as your ignition switch operates to start it. I wouldnt do that if its a daily driver. There might be a main wire somewhere you can toggle switch too, which would work better. Just a wild guess if Sunny's ideas dont pan out would be in the wiring harness near the ignition switch or under the dash. Could be real hard to figure that out unless you can follow schematics well or trace wires.
Good luck keeping the old jeep on the road.

Was this Jeep previously running correctly? Or did this issue happen after something was changed?
On GM systems this can happen with internal reg. alternators, or if someone swaps in an HEI distributor and doesn't use keyed power.

Or,.... they put in a Vertex magneto in their AMX and get so excited to try it that they forget to hook up the ground wire to the kill switch.

I believe that the distributor was swapped out, and a Weber carb put on. Just put old switch back in , the battery is dead right now still fussing with it. I rebuilt carb a couple of weeks ago, new sway bar links this week. All worked well till yesterday, must have not had the new switch in right instructions are a little vague.
