The wife's Grand Cherokee, three frozen brake calipers in two weeks. One last year too. That is all four in about six months, crazy! Best part about it is no one has them, always an adventure to find them.

We've got three Jeeps now and have owned about a dozen. Never had a caliper go on any of them. This one takes the cake! Never saw a car eat four calipers like that. One, maybe two, but four that close together?

Odd. Usually calipers last just about forever these days. And for them to go like that. Yea, I'm thinking some kind of contamination.

I'll say it again, it all points to brake fluid. I had issues with my Hyundai and it was old fluid with high water content and it also needed DOT 4 upgrade. It also blew the master cylinder so ABS and ESC lights were on. The new cylinder was under the fuse box and cost $2200.

That makes sense. The only problem with it is as I recall, and I may be mistaken, the fluid appeared clean and bright coming out of the calipers. and drain all the old crap out every drop. DOT 3 or DOT 4 that is supposedly backward compatible? Either this is one batch of weirdo calipers or there is reaction. What else can it be?

Coalnewbie is right. Brake fluid is vegetable based, so it has an affinity for water. Water in the fluid causes corrosion, which causes the calipers to seize. Change it every 24 months....

I'm going to check the fluid real close and pull the seals up to see what the piston looks like.

and if you are going to keep the car, change the brake lines. I don't know what year the car is but the NE is a horrible place to keep cars from dissolving. Water will still leave the fluid clear, so you will never tell. Once a car brake job is done I throw the extra fluid away.

No rust on this car, everything is real clean under it oddly enough.
