Good advice on what to check by several folks. I never worked on Harleys, but if it has a silly big duration cam in it, the actual cylinder compression is likely pretty low. Unless higher compression pistons, etc. were put in to compensate.

The engine was supposedly built with high performance parts but I have no idea to be honest about it. I do know it has a large cam and S&S carburetor. I also know it has some kind of funky ignition module on it as well. The reversion suggestion has me thinking. Last year he put slip-on on mufflers on it and it ran pretty damned good from what I remember. The poor bike has been hacked by people that talk big and know little about mechanical things. It's a very nice looking bike, it just runs like crap. The guy he paid last year sent it back to him without the choke even working properly. He also apparently used an impact driver to reassemble everything he put back together. I'll get some pictures and post them when I can.

Problem w/ those modules is the only thing ya can do to see if it's screwin up is to replace it.

Just as a quick test take a couple really small c-clamps or small vise grips and put them at the end of the pipes to break up the exhaust pulse.. bet it helps.. also if you remove the air cleaner with it running blip the throttle is there's a cloud of gas coming out carb its reversion.

Thanks for the advice regarding the reversion. I should be able to try that this weekend.olpanrider wrote:Just as a quick test take a couple really small c-clamps or small vise grips and put them at the end of the pipes to break up the exhaust pulse.. bet it helps.. also if you remove the air cleaner with it running blip the throttle is there's a cloud of gas coming out carb its reversion.

Never heard that one. Be interesting to hear the results. Always had K's, pans & shovels. Always ran 2" straight pipes on my shovel. Never owned an Evo so they're out of my knowledge span after a point. In fact, I have no idea on what reversion is!! Just getting old I suspect!

I am somewhat familiar with reversion more so from race engines. Never really gave it a thought. It does make some sense though. I wish the bike had been left alone for the most part. It's definitely been messed up by more than one person. That cam was not needed nor was a that crazy ignition module. That's how he got it though.

Can't guarantee it's the only issue or will completely fix it. but I will guarantee if he puts them it will run better.

Gonna try the small c-clamps, hopefully today. He isn't home at the moment or I would have tried it already.

Yep. If it has stock pistons he would probably be happier with a stock or stockish cam.hank2 wrote:Good advice on what to check by several folks.
