Would need to switch it over to coal to pass the emissions test for our state vehicle inspection.

He just didn't take it far enough. The stove should be replaced with a woodgas generator, he could run the car's engine off the exhaust from heater instead of buying gasoline. If you're not familiar with syngas here is a FEMA link that explains it. BTW, during WW2 Germany ran buses and tanks, for training purposes not in battle, on woodgas.

I think he needs to get a little coal burner in the back seat, maybe one of them little Jotul stoves, with a really big baro damper.
