The Hemi tick is a known thing. I use Rotella T6 5-40 in my 6.4
Kevin
That’s expensive oil for a gasser, thats the same stuff i use in my 6.7L.

I wasn’t aware it was a thing? I have two friends plus my brother in law all have 6.4’s and i haven't heard anything about a tick.

Hey Rob,

Sad about the F350 but it lived a good life with you. I agree about the Ram being a lot of truck for the money. Too much truck for me, I've been looking for a gently used Tacoma.

Good luck with the new truck!

For the rust preventative try Rust-Veto 344(Cosmoline). I used it on my sons 4runner mild resto we did this past summer. Thinned the material using mineral spirits and used a cavity wax nozzle to spray inside the doors. The stuff is incredible, as it will weep into the small pinch welds and then "hardens". Does not harden like paint but rather like a super stiff wax. We shot the entire chassis as well using a HVLP sprayer using maybe a quart of parent material.

**EDIT** realized I replied to an 11 year old post regarding rust preventative...

Why is T6 expensive? Redline or Amsoil is expensive....The Hemi tick is a thing in any Hemi, but particularly ones in the mid teens. FCA (Fiat/Chrysler) quietly made changes to stop it without having to have a recall. They fought tooth and nail when claims were made under warranty for wiped out cams. Some people got new engines.....I had a 2012 4.7 that expired before the warranty was up, by 3000 miles. Meaning at 57,000 miles. Nothing but top quality synthetic since it was new. My last 5.7, a 2016 was still purring at 119,500.
After typing about this tick, I have got one myself on this 6.4. Last oil was the Rotella gas truck oil, going to change it soon, I have 4600 on this oil, and have the manifold bolts checked. I am not sure what I will put in it, but it may be Redline 5w30.

buy oil when they have rebates. mobil1, shell, quaker state, valvoline, castrol, etc... they all run rebates throughout the year and you can get full synthetic for less than $2 a quart. pepboys has been running $30 off a 5qt of rotella gas truck every month this year.

thinned cosmoline is good for interior panels, thinned and heated vaseline works too. get a gallon of fluid film and shoot that on the undercarriage. lots of YT videos on that.

Rob,you sure spawned a Good Rebirth on this thread! Seeing the Ford leave is kinda like watching your oldest kiddo leave Da' Home! We get attached! Here in Ohio,Father Time, along with Uncle Brine and Aunt Salt sure plays Hell with Our vehicles! Enjoy that Ram! As far as I'm concerned, they've stepped their game up.

Definitely not as expensive as Amsoil or redline but there are a lot that use the cheapest crap they can find, now i have something to listen for when we camp :D The only thing i have heard is you should use 93 octane in the 6.4 not sure if thats true, my brother in law laughs at me for the cost of diesel but his 93 costs more then my diesel.

Nice truck. I like red - and had the opportunity to buy a red Ram. It was a 2020 leftover, and identical to the white one I bought...including the price, and they would not discount it due to the high demand for trucks. I decided to go for the 2021. When I went back a few days later to pick up my truck, the other 2500's they had were all gone.

I asked the guys at the dealership about that. They said the 2020 and older 6.4's recommend the use of 89 octane for premium performance, but 87 octane is perfectly acceptable (per the owner's manual). The 2021 owner's manual just recommends the use of 87 octane. If I had to guess they have made some tweaks to the timing curve/fuel map.

Rob has it right. 89 was recommended. 93 is a waste of money. I get some ethenol free gas that is still only 89, I think, and it makes a difference in mileage. But I normally just use 87. Among the forums, it is frequently mentioned to use gas from one of the big boys, Shell, Exxon, etc. The reasoning is the cheaper gas is.....cheaper. It meets the octane requirements but does not have the additive packages.

The best I will do is run a tank of 93 through road & plow trucks every couple months--I do run a jug of marvel mystery oil through road truck every 2 or 3 months--also put a glug in gas jug for chainsaws, weed whacker & wheel horse lawn tractors--all with real good results even after sitting all winter.

I took the Ram on a nice ride this morning over to VT. 55 mph on the level with only a few stop signs. With a tailwind I might be able to squeak 18 out of it.

Check that by hand calculation. I have had 4 of them and none were accurate. Present one is off by about 2 mpg. The Ford one I had in 07 was not right either.

I will check it by hand over the course of a tank. Either way it is encouraging.

Got the plow home today. Works perfectly. I gave it a good dose of fluid film, removed the extensions and unhooked it for the summer. I might put the extensions back on at some point but will try it without first.

Also got some Husky mud guards installed, mainly to prevent rock chips.
