Im in one of the areas that has it. A big part of the problem was their idea of deer management here was having too many deer, so disease spreads quick. Now they have a hunting season about every month trying to thin the herd. Nature always has a way of culling overpopulation and this is one of them.

i havent been missing having to dodge deer on the highways all the time. There were way to many and Ive hit 4 in the last 20 years and came close way to many other times. Theres a big state park near me with no hunting. Surprise, surprise, they got that disease there.

Didn't -75 kill everything .. humans and animals? I would have been toast that is for sure.

I joke a little but until there is a spot test for this, eat deer with caution. In my youth (8 years old) I worked on a dairy farm in S England (hand milking) there was mad cow disease, I think. One day a bunch of people came and shot every cow and buried the remains. Admissions? No, England did not have this in their herds. Hmmmm....

PS, I wish a could have wasted a bit more, I need it.

My dad died of those nasty prions. Was in England during the war in the AAF and grew fond of the local's meat eating habits. Died in '84, I believe about 4 years before the mad cow thing broke across the pond.

Deer do not stay within 2 miles of me in the winter, too open. Even if the corn is left standing they leave. They are smarter than me.

No reports of CWD near where we hunt, but before we pull the trigger my daughter and I know to watch how the deer act.

When dressing out and butchering, we follow the DEC guide lines for avoiding CWD contamination. We glove up with heavy duty commercial, solvent resistant gloves - stronger than the gutting gloves sold for hunters. And we're very careful to avoid contact with any brain or spinal tissue. After butchering, the spine and head get double bagged and go in the land fill. All the work surfaces and knives get sterilized after.

We were asked by a family member to save the heads for dog food and we refused. Pooch had to settle for just the lower legs to chew on.

There is a literal range war brewing very near to me over CWD as several land owners spar with each other when one seems to cater to the Game Commissions plans to do a massive kill off. I will refrain from any further comment as I don’t fully understand the situation but it is a very big issue in Bedford County.
