THe hill is full of young & old bucks--we all got together (3 neighbors) & decided to get some of the big bucks & some of the younger ones with some size. My one neighbor got a real nice one during bow season- dressed out at 160 lbs.& already had him mounted--I went out this AM & got this young dude--he dressed out at 138 lbs. Still got doe permits but we're gonna be real picky just takin OLD ones. Yep--I'm getting old LOL used cell to call neighbor to come up & get me & my young buck with his 4 wheeler!! YEP, it's inevitable!!! Time to sharpen some knives.

Thats about the perfect size, give or take 10 pounds, for eating. I'll take venison any day over hamburger. Congrats!

I could get one of the many deer that are in my yard daily. I live next to a park where the deer are protected and they are almost tame . Many big does, maybe I’ll wack one later this year.
I would agree that one you got Fred is perfect size for meat. I’ve always been a meat hunter and could care less about the big racks. I like seeing those big dominant bucks , but would rather have a young doe for eating. Good luck to all you hunters I hope you get what your looking for.

That deer is just right and we are shameless users of ATV's as well in our mid to late 50s.
My friends and I had a good year and hunting the Adirondacks can be tough. John and I got a 10 and a 7 about 20 minutes apart on the same hill shortly after the rut started. Yup, they were both following does. Mine was about 155 lbs. and his around 165. Several days later Terry shot a huge 7. He estimated around 200 and it’s the first deer ever to have its hind legs hit the concrete when winched to the top and he’s shot a lot of deer. I didn’t see a decent sized anything during black powder season so I got skunked there. Maybe the late black powder season will be better but it’s usually to damn cold to sit in a stand.

Went out with one of my daughters on her land.
Opening morning I saw a small doe going by about 50 yards below me along the stream edge - being followed by a fawn. Figured if I'm gonna use my doe permit, plus make an orphan of that fawn, I'd want more meat in the freezer than that doe had on it, so I let it go by.
Couple of hours later I saw three does running the other way toward the swamp just south of us.
She saw a young buck that walked right up within a few yards of her stand and didn't run until she blinked. She couldn't risk taking the shot because the road and some neighbor's house were behind the buck.
Never saw any others, but it sounded like a war zone around us. I've never heard so much shooting on an opening day. Makes me wonder if there's any deer left to bother going back out again.
Not a total loss, got to spend time in the woods, ..... and I made a red squirrel mad !

The only ones worth taking are does just after the spots are gone. And then just the “backstrap” and tenderloin. The rest is dog food

I guess we must hunt different over this way. Most hunt cause they need the food.

We've had a bunch of bucks on the farm this year. I have no interest in shooting any but do enjoy watching and photographing them...ignore the date and time in that photo

Not so different here, Fred - lots of meat hunters.
As my late hunting partner used to say, "Antlers make thin soup."
I just wasn't in a hurry to take a small young momma doe when my daughter has been seeing older does bedded right below her kitchen windows about 100 yards from where I was sitting. And I'm proud that my daughter remembered to check the back ground and decided not to risk a shot at that buck because of what's beyond it - just like I taught her. Still got time to fill the freezer.

There are too many trophy hunters here, especially during muzzleloader season. Im not saying I'd pass on shooting a 30 point buck, but Im after smaller ones, including does.

Had one in the later years on the farm I hunted with my late partner. I never got to see it because it was always up at his end of the place. But when I asked him how many points this great old buck had, he replied, " Too many to count - it looks like he's wearing a Christmas tree."freetown fred wrote: ↑Mon. Got a 12 point "management" buck this year. Helping out the gene pool some...
This ole boy was beautiful - from the rack down... lol
Officially he had 12 points. 5 big points on the right, 2 big ones on the left, a brow tine on each side and three 1"+ stickers around the base. Had a narrow 11" spread with some big beams. May have been the ugliest rack on a mature deer I've ever seen... He had quite an impressive looking body and head. He weighed in at 174lbs after he was field dressed.
Hope to go out this weekend and get a nice size doe.
