Well, big game season is just around corner here; but right now it's game on out west. My Son, Austin, is stationed at Ft Lewis, Wa & invited me & his school buddy Joe "ash pan k6" to join him on a primitive elk hunt there. So we're flying out of Albany on Wednesday & headed to Seattle. We'll be hunting the area of Pe Ell in the South West part of the state. He was lucky & drew a permit to hunt on Weyerhaeuser property there. About 94K acres with a limited number of permits, so it sounds promising. The season is black powder only & no scopes allowed. So it should be interesting. We'll be heading in on Friday to set up camp & do some scouting as the season opens on Saturday. Will keep ya posted & send pics as we go . Hopefully there will be some signal where we set up camp.

Thanks guys, gonna need all the luck I can get. Friends of mine & Austin just got back from there bow hunting. They were camped bout 150 mi north of Pe Ell on Olympic peninsula. Told me they walked 40 mi in 4 days. Got within 20 yds of a big bull, but too much brush for a shot. Said Mtns so high there is still snow on top. I'm a little intimidated to be honest as the boys are half my age. We opted for muzzleloader permits as the bulls are bugling strong right now But not so much latter on when rifle
season opens. To me at my age this will be the hunt of a lifetime.

Good luck! I met a guy at my shooting range a month ago that was shooting a muzzleloader with open sights.....because he and his son were going on an iron sights only muzzleloading hunt for Elk......Not sure where he was going.

Thanks Kevin, Could very well be WA. The boys were doing pretty good with open sights bout 3 to 4 in group @ 100 yds.
Like I said, will try to post as much as possible & show pics; at least to show what the camp looks like along with the terrain.
Also, on another note, will be traveling to your old stomping grounds the middle of Nov deer hunting. Austin is coming here then & we will be staying/hunting around Danforth,ME. Hunted there quite a bit in the 90's.

Danforth! Now that is in the middle of nowhere! Good luck also as down on the coast all the deer are right in town. Big problem in Machias. Mostly because the uneducated younger generation and the older fools of previous generations are shooting right in town!
Big deer up there but not many of them.....

Agreed. But seems to be a few more there than the Western mountainous areas. Think it's because of more cedar bogs & swamps that offer better survival in Winter. Dunno for sure, but do know we shot way more there than anywhere else in the state. We shall see.

On another note, we made it to Seattle & then to austin's. Tomorrow is shopping & packing, then Friday we'll be off to set up camp. The mtns look beautiful & can't wait to see them up close & personal. Will do my best to get pics out when & if I can.

Well, got back from the cascade mtns with not a sight or sound of an elk. They seemed to have stopped bugling& seemingly to have disappeared. Our theory is that elk must be like rabbits & go in holes lol.
However, a very good time was had by all. Gonna try to post pics now as got the boys here to help me out. The scenery was unbelievable!!!

Here is a pic of Austin on left & Joe when we settled on a camp site, & I asked them if they were ready to set up camp & hunt. Gotta love the response lol.
And btw Fred, ain't much worried bout anybody stealing the boys at all.
Cause would cost too much to feed em.
