I recently discovered through researching this subject that the main (and only?) difference between Braunschweiger and Liverwurst is that the former is mildly smoked while the latter is not.
Some sources claim that Liverwurst has smoked bacon added and Braunschweiger does not, and that this sort of levels the flavor playing field.
We can find Braunschweiger around here, but we never see Liverwurst in the stores. I enjoy Braunschweiger on occasion, so I would really like to try Liverwurst. My wife says they routinely had Liverwurst in Missouri and she grew up preferring it over Braunschweiger. She would also like to find it locally.
Braunschweiger and mayonnaise seem to have been made for each other. A marriage made in heaven.

The online picture of Walmart's 'Thurmann's' brand Liverwurst surprisingly says Braunschweiger on the package when you zoom in on it.
Thurmann's state on their own website that they sell it smoked and unsmoked. The unsmoked comes in a white tube and the smoked in a yellow tube. The Walmart online picture shows a yellow tube... This seems to confirm that the only real difference between the two comes down to whether it is smoked or not.
We're going to make a run to Walmart anyway with the hope that the white tubed product is there also. Got to vote first though.
