Now that I'm bwana hunter. I was thinking about what people do with the food they gather. I had venison once and I wasn't a fan but I don't think it was prepared well.
Any UNUSUAL recipes out there? Squirrel? Etc?
The instructor for my hunting class claims to have eaten coyote but says there is no way to make a salt water duck taste good.
Which is too bad because I can walk to the shore from where I live.

I don't really have any unusual recipes. I do love to hunt but I am also not a big fan of venison if it is gamey. Here is one simple recipe that my bro in law gave me for venison that I love.
Take a couple of steaks and pound them down to about 1/4" thick with a tenderizer mallet. Marinade overnight in a 50/50 mix of soy sauce and maple syrup. He cooks on a gas grill, but I prefer charcoal.

Smoking makes the deer meat taste good to my family(wife and kids will eat), summer balonee, dry beef, jerkey you can't taste the game flavor, any fresh made meat,hamburger,fresh sausage, etc. the game taste is still noticable even with pork added. For good steaks, it's hard to beat real beef,not enough fat at deer meat.

I'm hoping I get my actual license by May when the turkey season starts. At least I KNOW how to cook that.
I'm hoping to get a smoker at some point this year so maybe some smoked venison is in my future.

For venison, I actually prefer the "gamey" flavor. That to me is venison and what distinguishes it from other meats.
But we do marinate them in either italian dressing or store bought marinades. Rest of the family likes it better that way. Marinade a couple of hours before onto the grille does it.
We also take meat out to Martin's near Shady Maple for sticks, both hot and mild. Make our own burger, bologna and our own jerky. Burger is just cut 20% with pork to bind it together. Makes one hell of a pot of chili.

We usually need 10+ deer per year for everything we use between the 2 families. And the grandkids can't wait for us to cook it. Another couple years and they will be helping to harvest their own. At least we can use them to drag them out........

I was pissed - I should've easily had 100 on that .... these 2 questions were worded funny & they got me.

I 've never tried it, but was told by Grampa to cook duck you dry and entire loaf of bread for a day. Break it up and use it as stuffing while cooking the bird. Your answer "it depends on the size of the magazine " was not what they looking for !!!
And the second question: What size weapon is recommended for squirrel hunting?

Etc, etc....I forget what the correct answer was I was laughing to hard at the wrong answers.
