6/19/17 Who knew cooking lobster could be so dangerous? I just got done steaming some in a large pressure cooker. I decided to dump the pot outside, tripped over my own feet in the driveway and was more concerned with getting the hot water away from me than landing properly. I knew it was bad the moment I hit and suspected the collarbone. A look in the mirror confirmed it. It was 2030 and I wasn't going to the ER. I actually did get a little sleep and went to my GP early the next day. When I saw the x-ray I assumed I needed surgery. The GP sent me to North Country Sports Medicine, a well-respected practice and they confirmed it. I had to wait 6 days as the upper body surgeon was on vacation. That was a long 6 days. 5 weeks off work minimum but I do have company provided disability and won’t be short of $ to spend as I need. I can take care of the basics around the house but not much more. I’m glad I have friends who are willing to help.

Hey Geno... I can relate buddy

I am at the end of my 3rd week out of a 4 week vacation due to a herniated disk in my neck. It started as an injury during a coal delivery 2.5 years ago and steadily got worse until I could barely feel my right arm at times. The surgeon pulled the disk out between C-4 and C-5, put a bone spacer in there to get the right alignment and then permanently fused it with a titanium plate. The disk was busted up so bad it came out in fragments.

First week I totally lived in the recliner but gradually have been getting back on my feet. Had a follow-up yesterday with X-rays to see how well things were holding up and he was very pleased with my progress. Starting to feel better everyday.

Photos of my X-rays attached..... it is sort of cool looking! :D

Hope you continue to improve. Thank God you thought quick enough to throw the hot water away from you! :o

Rest up neighbor and let them bones heal properly. Better once than having to redo it if they don't take correctly.

Thanks for the support. The 1st week was the worst. One, even slightly wrong move caused significant pain. After surgery the pain pretty much went away. That wasn’t what I was told to expect but I’m not complaining. I only had a few bites of the lobster that night but finished it the next afternoon.
CoalJockey, I’ll take a collar bone every time over the spine.

I didn't know they could wait six days. When my mom broke her femur they waited three days, said any longer and the bone ends would start to heal over. At least she was walking within a few hours of the surgery.

On your disability insurance, I was once off work for eight weeks, I had 60% DI. I was back to work before I got a check. So while the money eventually arrived, I still had to live off my savings.
