I bought a 1981 Convertible (soft top) Mac pumper for $2500 with a 750 gall tank from the Hobart fire dept NY.. Lots of fun but remember they can't even give them away. For a while I was the coolest grandpa on the plant... that did not last long. Lots of tips if your serious. My advice ... don't bother.

Friend who got me into the antique car hobby had a 30 American La France open cab 1000gpm pumper. Fun to ride around in, but parking becomes a problem pretty much wherever you go. Not as bad as his 65 foot long City Service ladder truck, though. That took two people- one at each end - just to steer it around corners. :o

He had lots of fun taking friends for rides upstate to the fire truck meets at Valhalla NY reservoir.

He had a running board mounted soda/acid fire extinguisher that he gutted and then had it silver plated inside. Used to fill it with Vodka screwdrivers. Said it was fun to watch passersby shocked looks seeing his buddies riding in the hose bed and up-ending and drinking from a fire extinguisher hose.

And yes, used fire trucks go for cheap. It's getting all the gear that goes on them that can get expensive.

He bought a 50 Mac pumper from Amityville LI. He was the only bid at $500.00. Said he wanted a closed cab as his "winter truck".

Car collectors can be crazy, but fire engine collectors make them look sane. :D

come on guys, its no crazier than collecting stoves if you have the room. I see plenty of pranks that could be pulled on people with one of them and great for watering the lawn ;) Could turn one into a human honey wagon then shoot it out into the fields near political rally's.

Great, .....If you want your lawn moved to the neighbor's yard. :D

Helped that friend with the 30 American La France drain a driveway storm drain sump during Hurricane Belle that had a clogged overflow pipe out to the street. It was threatening to overflow and flood the driveway and into his mother's basement apartment.

He was manning the pump controls so I picked up the 1-1/2 brass nozzle so it wouldn't whip around. He opened the valve and it threw me up against the chain link fence right behind me and was starting to push the fence over. Only way to stop being thrown over backwards and not blast him and the truck in front of me was I swung the nozzle off to the right, over the fence, .....and it cleaned all the neighbor's kid's Fisher Price yard toys into the next yard. :o

Next day, when everyone was out inspecting for storm damage, the neighbor mentioned to him how the storm was so strong it blew all their backyard stuff over the fence.

I just did a quick mow. Flippers and goggles help a lot.

It does not matter how big you build your next garage! Within 6 months you will be parking your car in the driveway again.

Ah yes, bugs in your teeth, the sound of that big t-head engine, mixed with the swish of those big chains. Nothing else like it.
