Starting any two stroke diesel is quite an experience on a cold morning. Nothing beats the sound of an air starter followed by a lopey Detroit idle.

What is the idea behind the shotgun shell starting system? I imagine it is pretty simple and lightweight compared to anything else.

Air starters seem to work well on big stationary engines...unless you have no air pressure.

Love those old farm engines.

Sept is the time when I connect my Lister CS/6s which I use for emergency power. So today I will start them on HO and then change to soy oil etc. (+any old c rap). Good for another million hours. :) Starting is easy if you bleed the fuel intake first.

Nice setup Simon. What are you using for cooling? I have seen some guys use a cast iron radiator mounted on a shelf.

I use an 80 gall air compressor tank from an old Toledo unit, antifreeze 50/50. Simple loop. That way it's all convection driven and no pumps are required. BTW, Marshall and Metro were the first to enter the Lister copy market and parts are interchangeable.

Forget Ambien, open the window start the engine and g'night. I am way to old and broken down for this chit ...

If we are on old farm machinery, I love this video.

This is an original British Lister which mean it is about 70 years old. The absence of a COV and the casting type gives it away. There is no cooling system as they have connected the outlet to the inlet. No air filtration and no exhaust. Now this is abuse and yet somehow it still goes.

A friend had a pair of 6v53 DD in his boat, I had a few 6-71 & 8v-71 DD in trucks. They always seemed fairly easy to start in winter. If you could spin it over a few seconds it would run.

Most know the old two stroke DD were notorious for leaking oil. As the story goes, a guy bought five brand new Peterbilt with the 12v-71 and hired a professional photographer to take pics and make a giant mural for the wall behind his desk. Came to work the next morning and had a big puddle of oil on the carpet under the poster.

Anyone ever rope start a big diesel?

About old tractors, this was in the news a few weeks back. A guy from Honeybrook Pa drove his 1948 John Deere cross country to raise funds for Wounded Warriors. He put a Peterbilt cab on it and is towing an RV trailer.
