Been helpin an Amish friend do a loggin job (120 acres) mostly Ash. I'm runnin 1 team, the father the other. Boys are cutting, choking & workin the landing. They won't do the camera so I'll post pix as they come. Went in to feed this AM & debating whether to harness up or not. Right now we're in a hole with lots of up hill haulin. If we can find a flatter area, we'll harness up. Oh well suns comin out--WTF after 2 wks of GLOOM & MUD--back at it.

Cutting I understand, but what is choking and working the landing?
Seems each trade has its own vocabulary.
Mud to contend with but much more comfortable temperatures to work in.
Seems amazing that not that long ago horses and oxen were the only haulers helping man.

That almost sounds fun! Almost, but not enough for me to want to do it I do enjoy watching work horses do their thing though. They can really make the mud and dirt fly when pulling!

Choking is putting a chain or cable aoround the end of the logs to pull them. Landing is the spot where all the logs are to to be put on trucks, or processed (cut to length, etc.)

The chains to pull the logs are called choke chains Richard. They got a different type hook on one end. Once ya get good at choking, it can control which way the log will roll. Workin the landing (where ya drag the logs) just unhookin chains

They must have a debarker. My guy won't take logs stuffed with dirt, eats the saw blade.

Fred, What are Ash logs goin for? I got a bunch of ash Id sell if they were bringin anything. Id always saved them for firewood but now Ive seen the light. Unless they cut themselves down and march off the hill and into a truck they arent ever gonna see a fire

Not sure WL--land owner is workin out the truckin & which mill. Most all mills have a rosser machine (de-barker), wash pit, etc. Found a flatter route but gonna give it a couple days to dry out (if that's possible) hauled a few logs out & put the horses up--I'm sure they don't like the muck anymore then I do.

Very nice Fred! My Amish neighbors are out cutting tamarack this week. They're milling it out for their stalls in the new barn.
Better get em cut while the are worth something. The EAB "emerald ash borer" is probably going to kill off all the ash trees. Some are comparing it to the chestnut blight.waldo lemieux wrote:Fred, What are Ash logs goin for? I got a bunch of ash Id sell if they were bringin anything. Not much here in Pa , about 250mbf, with the EAB killing them all. Large quantity , low demand. Hardly worth going thru all the work,
Dave

Up here we're all pretty happy just getting the job this time of year & making a comfortable amount of$$$$$$$$$$ Well worth it to keep food on the table, kids in shoes & the tax's paid. Actually, a few yrs back NYS put MANY of them thar purple traps all over & I haven't heard anyone complaining about the ash borers for a couple yrs or so.
