Fusion. The nuclear reaction that powers the sun will inevitably be put into use here on Earth.. This will be the holy grail of energy production. Say bye bye to wind, solar, fossil and nuclear fission..
Imagine a furnace that consumes 1 ounce of water instead of 10 tons of coal to heat your house all winter. Beam me up Scotty!

I wouldn't say bye-bye just yet. Although I've heard the promise and expected practicality of fusion articulated by someone with an advanced degree in physics, that was almost 50 years ago. Still waiting.

I've always had an open mind to new technology
True, but I look at how far things have come since the 1800's steam locomotives. It is just a matter of time and with every year that passes there is progress, even if only inches. It's coming.

Crap, I saw the topic and poster and thought Lightning built a small coal power plant for his house....

Is the tokamak safe? I didn’t read anything about that part. Hope it doesn’t turn into another Chernobyl.

Like was said above; they've been trying to fuse atoms for better than fifty years like smashing them together in 25 mile radius cyclotrons and still can't get more energy out of it than they put in to the process. I wouldn't put away those black rocks yet.

Now that one was solved a long time ago. I'm sure I recall seeing Dick Van Dyke flying a car around England in the 1960's, and in the 1970's they were so commonplace that even AMC had a flying version of the Matador (IIRC one of those appeared in "The Man With the Golden Gun").

Ahh,The Pac Is Back!! Nice Summation,I Do Believe! I'm just Glad that it looks like Our Breadman is Back and in fine Technological Form!! I'll be thinking of You Guys Tonight when I'm watching the 1984 version of George C. Scott's Dickens Portrayal of Der Ebenezer Scrooge! Always got a Jolt at the end of the Flick when a rather revised Scrooge tells Bob Cratchett to "Order More Coal" !! Merry Christmas,You Carbon Bangers,You!!

Haha, don't get me wrong, I love my coal. I'd have a bowl of it with milk if it didn't break my teeth. The sad reality is that its not a long term solution. It will get more and more difficult to mine and process as supplies run out, just like all fossil fuels. Nuclear fusion will be the answer going forward in generations to come and we are on the brink of an energy revolution, just like other revolutions in past history. Watch and see...
I think we will see this in our lifetime.

Put down that crack pipe and step away from the keyboard...
No time soon will big oil or any energy utilities be sidelined...when THEY build fusion you'll pay THEM a monthly bill as it will be meterd and goverment taxes will be collected on it....shheez, there ain't no free lunch here boys...

Remember when...
Nuke was going to be so cheap...
No meters would be necessary...
The Nuke islands they were going to build off the Jersey coast...
