"Percentage of total global primary energy demand provided by wind and solar is 1.1%"

In the late 1950s my Dad brought home a transistor radio, a bit bigger than a pack of cigarettes. My brother hung it on his bedpost in our barracks-style bedroom so the four of us could listen to it at all hours, instead of to the 50-pound tube set on the dresser. Probably solid state electronics accounted for 1.1% of radios at the time, and the technology should have been abandoned at that point.

Tube amps sound better ... no boom boxes on the beach ... yeah, shame they were not abandoned. Some analogies are just plain silly.

"... wind turbines being decommissioned after 20 years … wind turbines only last for 20 years, maybe 25 … Coal and natural gas plants can easily run for 50 years, and nuclear plants can be updated and retrofitted to run for 60 years ..."

20 years? First off, don’t believe that number ... it was cherry-picked from various studies to make the worst possible case. And if a nuclear plant can be retrofitted for a few billion dollars to last 60 years, surely a slightly-simpler ;) wind turbine can also be retrofitted, or should we say "maintained". I have even been known to replace the wheel bearings on my car rather than decommission it.

The Cherry picking was the numbers that said they last longer than 25 years.

I was told the same 20 year expected life span by the owners of the wind turbine farm in Fenner NY when I was on a tour their facility with a car club.

Even the greenies agree they don't last as some were saying when they were trying to push wind farms.
http://www.renewableenergyfocus.com/view/43817/th ... -turbines/
http://www.renewablesfirst.co.uk/windpower/windpo ... ions-last/

And some wind farms aren't even making it to the 20 year mark before they need a massive investment in rebuilding.
https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/money/agr ... 846375001/

And it's not just in this country that they are not lasting as long as some said they would, either.

" ………………..Wind turbine: The life and death
The life span of a wind turbine, power companies say, is between 20 and 25 years. But in Europe, with a much longer history of wind power generation, the life of a turbine appears to be somewhat less. ………"

And here's an engineer's explanation of why they don't last as long as was claimed.

RB, put your car 150 ft. in the air and hang 3 enormous blades on it.

Have you ever stood directly underneath one of these while they are running?

I’m talking about the super-turbines, not your backyard barn burner BTW.

In the 1950's nuclear war was going to wipe out civilization (see the movie "On The Beach").

Then in the 1960s, over population was going to destroy us (the world's population has doubled since, but we're still here).

In the 1970's it was a coming ice age.

Then in the late 70s we were going to run out of oil in 25 years.

Then the world would end because of the loss of the rain forests.

So far all those "experts" who keep predicting the destruction of civilization have been 100% wrong. Not one prediction of pending doom has come true.

Mother Nature will take us out long before we do ourselves in...
Or some mad man will light up a bunch of nukes...
Or a lab will have a mutated virus get loose...
But burning stuff to make energy will not be it...
