Some of the largest solar farms in the world....

China announced that all farms will have to be cheaper than coal to
proceed to be built.
All of these projects are economical now and hundreds are on the drawing
boards. Many at a KW cost of ~ $0.05 ,way cheaper than any coal.

Thanks for the update -- (gotta say it quick before everybody jumps on you to say it can't work.)
But that solar installation in China, that can produce as much as a nuclear plant -- what's the danger of it melting down?

- Other Heating: Wishing it was cold enough for coal here....not really
And they are building them on reclaimed land in an area no one is moving to, with gov. subsidies, and to shut up the envirolunies that constantly harass them about coal mining.

Solar and Wind plants of this large size will be very common in
the years ahead due to the cost of solar cells going down and
more efficient batteries to save the energy for the times needed.
You cannot beat any energy that is so wide spread and available
all over the planet. The sun has been here for millenniums and will
continue for many more , so all the energy is available to all people,
all we need to do is learn how to use it.
Solar panels have dropped 99% in 40+ years !!!!!!
