After 7 years of reliable service from our old HP laptop, I decided to upgrade. I was not looking to spend a lot, but I wanted something that would run Windows 10 very well. Portability was less of a concern than performance and features, but the footprint had to fit on our roll-top desk. I decided to look for a unit with an Intel i7 processor, at least 8 gb of ram, and a solid state hard drive. I quickly discovered that those specs. put a new unit out of my price range, so I decided to look at refurbished units.
My wife has an HP Elitebook from her employer, and we have been pretty pleased with that - so I looked them up. Newegg has a nice selection of refurbished units, and I settled on this one:
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item= ... 6834267436
So far I have been very pleased with it. I would not have even know it was refurbished, no marks, scratches, etc. Fresh install of Windows 10, and it is SNAPPY. Unlike our old unit, this one handles multiple applications/webpages with ease.
My old laptop is going to get a fresh SSD hard drive, and probably hang out on the coffee table until it dies, or one of my boys is ready to start using it.

I doubt I will ever buy a new computer again. My refurbished desktop has been working great since I bought it. It came with a clean installation of Windows 7, nothing else which is just what I wanted. Many new computers come loaded with so much BS they are crap right out of the box.

I don't play games, and the HDMI output on the laptop works great with my 65" TV.coalnewbie wrote: ↑Wed. Mar. 21, 2018 7:20 amand here is Robs monitor..

I'm with you gaw. New computers are just about unusable right out of the box. W 10 is a nightmare and I will never switch. Chromebooks all the way - $140. When it gets loaded with c rap as they all do just powerwash it and start again.

Couple of months ago, Melissa had to get a new laptop for her work. And recently, I had to get a new desktop. We're both cursing Windows 10 !!!!!! And I thought Win 8 was bad enough,....coalnewbie wrote: ↑Wed. Mar. 21, 2018 8:30 amI'm with you gaw. New computers are just about unusable right out of the box. I may see about getting my Win 7 machine fixed.

I have found Windows 10 to be very reliable, and I like the features. The problem most people have is they upgrade an older machine to Win 10, and it does not have the resources to run it correctly.
The refurbished laptop I just got has a plain Win 10 install, with MS office. None of the bloated stuff you would find on a retail unit. With that said, as long as you have a windows product key, you can download the "vanilla" version of Windows and install it yourself.
Simon, I agree that Chromebooks are great option for many.

If you are not using it already, Onedrive is great way to automatically backup your important documents.windyhill4.2 wrote: ↑Wed. Mar. 21, 2018 9:06 amMy son upgraded my computers to windows 10...I didn't like the change at first...but then i rarely like change....
