Strong speculation has it that the Mercedes gasoline engine with 50% efficiency is actually dieseling. The first gasoline engine to function as if it is a Diesel? And fuel is injected into the cylinders at 1,400 PSI (with the rules of F1 racing limiting fuel injection pressure to 100 BAR, or about 1,450 PSI).

I remember one year at Indy a turbine powered car was running away with the race until it broke down with a few laps to go. Turbines were banned the next year.

I wonder if turbines might be ideal for powering hybrid electric cars.

like a diesel electric locomotive...
or a few of the modern warships...
efficient turbine running at optimum efficiency...
To a small bank of batteries...
braking done by dragging the generators to make electric...
Or a hydrogen fuel cell... ;)
Or this...
Ant venom...

I doubt it, gas turbine engines are very inefficient, at least the aircraft ones I maintain are.

Don't get me wrong, gas turbine engines can make a szhit ton of shaft HP but they burn an inordinate amount of fuel per SHP. An equivalent recip engine is far less expensive to operate.

As an example, the small gas turbine engines that are used for high pressure bleed air and electrical ground power, on the biz jets I wrench, only generate about 25 shaft HP on 15 GPH of kerosene.

I would bet a small diesel electric car may be though.

Ahhhh i think everyone for got about Andy Granetelli running a turbine gas engine car at Indy 500, was winning. but hydraulic pumps drove turned wheels failed. No transmission turbine was used to power hydrualic pumps to drive wheels. So yes a turbine powered race car did almost win a BIG race. Think it was back 1967>69 range.
