Reboot Wireless Router Required...Why?

A query for the IT Masters....
We have Cox for our Internet and every so often (with that every so often becoming more frequent it seems), we get error messages regarding the inability to load, we simply cannot get Internet access UNTIL we reboot the wireless router by pulling out the plug out of the router and plugging back in. WE own the wireless router, not Cox. Wife who is the resident IT expert said she has read that folks reboot their router pretty much every night since providers change their IP addresses frequently.......Is there a logic to this.....or other problems ?
Any comments ?
Thanks !
Ug

I reboot mine a few times per year for good measure, but what you are describing is not normal at all. I don't think my parents have ever rebooted their Linksys.
I would try updating the router firmware and switching to a third party dns service, like Open DNS.

Firstly are talking about a router and not the modem or router/modem?
Having to reboot every day is not normal. Most ISP's do not regualarly change IP's and when they do the router should automatically work with the new one.
First thing I would try is use an ethernet cable to directly connect the device to see if there is any connectivity
Updating the firmware and then resetting it to factory condition may help. After installing the new firmware. There should be a little recessed button on the back that will give it the factory default settings. From there you should only need to set up your wi-fi password.

OK OP needs to be clearer, to clarify and expand info being provided (and I feel ya Bro !) answer these questions:
1) router used
2) modem used
3) are you losing connectivity
4) are you getting speeds so slow its creating issues (go to http://www.fast.com or http://www.speednet.com and elsewhere to test speeds)
5) have you connected the PC via ethernet during the problem time periods of poor wireless to your wireless router? And the results?
6) distance from router to PC?
7) have you googled looking for issues between the 3 (ISP/router/modem)? What were the fruits of your hours?
Not all routers play nice with all modems
Not all modems play nice with all ISPs
Not all combo modem/routers play nice with ISPs
Not all routers are equal
You cannot control your ISP. You can control your selection of router and modems. Your solution lies there I'm sure.
My guess? You have a combo router/modem ... none are very good (I've tried many) for the needs of its users.
Always have a bottle of aspirin nearby ! It can take time, experimentation, patience, and possibly new equipment to solve.

I have cable high speed Internet. I own my modem and have a wireless router. About once a month I "lose my Internet". I unplug both modem & router , wait 10 seconds & plug them back in & Voila! I have Internet again. About every three months, my unplugging & replugging doesn't work. I phone my Internet provider & they "ping" me, then I unplug & plug & I'm back in business. That's all I know!

ram gets fragmented...
not enough whole memory to run...
freezes...
reboot clears ram...
disposable devices built cheaply...
when reboot frequency gets too high replace...
assuming your router behind cox modem...
look at mikrotik...
https://mikrotik.com/
or ubiquiti

Sounds like a router problem Freddy...and not an unusual one.Freddy wrote:I have cable high speed Internet. I own my modem and have a wireless router. About once a month I "lose my Internet". Try just unplugging the router. It like does not matter tho as waiting for both to turn back on and cycle might be close to the same time period.
An ISP usually would require about 5 min. of being off to assign a new IP address (for cable its static/dynamic -- ip will not change unless ISP changes it or you force it to change).
Back-in-business? Monkey business I assume LOL.

I think Uglysquirrel was abducted by Gov. Malloy ... forcing him back to CT to pay high taxes and give up all his rights.
Mine did that about every other week then degraded to every week then every other day to every day. Bought a new router at Wally world and have not had a single reboot since. That was a year ago. They don't last forever

.....Feel the pain every day being surrounded by "all of them" .davidmcbeth3 wrote:I think Uglysquirrel was abducted by Gov. Malloy ... forcing him back to CT to pay high taxes and give up all his rights.
I'm making a copy of all this for my IT Manager, no way I'll provide a link to the Wife for this sordid forum.
(Then she could watch what I say)
Thanks for your help !
