Interesting until someone develops a projectile to defeat the foam. ;)

I think the impact from a high powered rifle would hurt anyone wearing it....That energy has to go somewhere.

Did you read it? 7.62X88 M2 AP round, that's high powered.
"In tests conducted by the development team, the foam body armor was able to defeat an armor-piercing bullet. And on impact, their foam smashed the bullet into powder?"

I'd imagine the foam is thicker than normal body armor and rigid. That thickness would dissipate the energy over a longer period of time, it's only infinitesimally small fractions of second longer but it's still longer. The rigidity would cause it be dispersed over wider area of the body.
