I was so happy last night to have lightning quick internet according to the speed test. Today I looked and it went from 220Mbps to 87Mbps. Huh.....that's odd.

Now I was having a couple adult beverages last night when I plugged everything in and by the time it finally booted I'd had another. So I got to thinking....my first move last night was from the modem directly to the PC. When I unplugged the router and went back to direct my speed went back to over 200Mbps. My router is a bottleneck.

We have 1 PC always connected, another in the garage 75' away via ethernet, Roku, and ipods (2-3) depending on the day. Oh yeah, my son has a gaming computer but it's not on when we are awake anyway.

Can any of you direct me towards a router that will give me wireless and not restrict what I pay for? Many thanks ahead of time.

Linksys WRT1900ACS

I got mine a few months ago and have been amazed at the increased wifi range and improved performance while streaming HD movies.

The loss (wired v. wireless) looks normal.

You are free to try other wireless routers to see if you can get better ....

I just went through this (new modem/wireless router) a few months ago.

Its fun ! (sarcasm)

I tried 5 different wireless routers and settled on on that cost $75 ....

A final one to try, though not tried, would have been like the AC1900 model (huge $$$$$)

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/d-link-ac1900-exo-dual-band-wireless-router/5052500.p?skuId=5052500

^^^ has gone down in price LOL was like $300

Have fun...

Nothing beats a Cat6 cable for speed. Wifi sucks for heavy loads.

The main computer, garage computer, and Roku are wired. The rest is wireless and isn't that important. I didn't think being wired that I'd lose >50% through the router.

I just went back and read your original post again - 87 Mbps is about 10 megabytes per second, which is pretty much the limit through Cat 5 cables and most of the older 10/100 Ethernet hardware. If you decide to upgrade the router, upgrade to Cat6 cables as well.

You will likely never exceed that trying to download anything from the web, but you can easily max it out if you are moving a lot of stuff around on your local network. I recently switched to Cat6 cables and a Gigabit ethernet switch when I installed the new router, the different in speed from PC to PC on my local network has been very noticeable.

I noticed the 10/100 on my router last night and wondered if that would limit me. Have cat 6 to both computers and the Roku. My son games with wifi but no one is awake at 3AM besides him after 2nd shift work so he's fine.

I went with the ASUS RT-AC66U......Dual Channel and it is so good I was able to stream to my Samsung Tablet and then screen mirror to out Samsung TV to see the NCAA Title game for football. It was flawless quality.

Linksys WRT1900 on the way. That'll fix the problem. Thanks gentlemen for your thoughts.

What makes me mad about all of this is Comcast kept telling me to upgrade. Now I'm not so sure the upgraded modem (TM722 to a TM822) makes all the much difference if it was throttled at the router. Oh well, I'll save $10/mo. and it'll pay for itself eventually.

They want folks to get a modem with Docisis 3.0 (sp?) ..... older ones, like the one I replaced was a 1.0 ver.

Did not make the speed any faster ... compatibility concerns I should think.

Beats me about the 722 v. 822 change if it affected anything at all ... or your cable company was just trying to scam more $$$ out of ya.

Modems and routers ... pain in butt.. I went through 3 modems and about 5 wireless routers to find a pair that was OK.

I'm Mr. Cheepo ! My Linksys 54G was fine for 15 yrs ....

Post back results of wireless router testing!

Here it is. From 87Mbps to 231.9 on one channel and 227.9 on the other channel. I'd say it's a pretty sizable improvement. Now I need to learn how to read faster!
