I can't wait for the day, lawyers can find a way to hold the "criminals" responsible for malicious activities on the net.
It happened to me "again", and I'm finally wising up to it.
I had a Compaq desktop, that's been working fine for years. I mistakenly installed a MacAfee anti virus program, not knowing the wife already had us set-up with frontier. So she un-installed Mac, a few days later, and there was a conflict between the 2 suppliers, and it/they finally "wiped" out my hard drive. Because my puter was on the older side, I guess I could've used an up-grade anyway, (which I just bought myself for Christmas), but it still burns my hide knowing these anti-virus suppliers can get away with it. It happened to me years ago, but I didn't put it together, until now.
So how do they know, "Warning! your computer's at risk!" anyway?

Just a poke and hope!
Take it all as BS and close out each window that comes up.
Even a window that appears to have no way to be closed out can be closed by doing "control F4" keys together.

Thanks for that tip McG. That's been a problem at times, that I didn't know how to get past.McGiever wrote:Just a poke and hope!

I once had a HD fail ... on writing my final thesis project.
I did have a hardcopy printout but had to redo numerous harvard graphics drawings.
Of course the OP could sue the company .. since its an old PC, a small claims case.
And likely would win .... (I don't see the company wanting to spend $10K for a $1K case)
Not up to .govs to solve your problems ... tackle this one yourself.
Find company's name, find registered agent ... serve either reg. agent or CEO with complaint (see state law about who to serve) IANAL
I've sued lots of companies.....

You make a good point, Dave. A small claims court, for a new PC. But I would need proof it was MacAfees fault for corrupting my puter, wouldn't I ?
And I had no intentions of putting it on the Government. Not sure where you were going with that.
I believe when the nets been around for a while, there will be a need for the "'Puter Police", and there will become a way to control the content better. Right now it's a free for all.

Assuming you're new computer is running windows 10 just let windows defender handle it and install the free version of Malwarebytes and run manual scan once a week.
Yes the two are compatible, Malwarebytes is compatible with most any virus software

My new computer came with a disc titled "Unlimited" Internet Security, by "total defense". It's a free install. The Anti-virus program installed from the dealer is "MacAfee". (How ironic is that?)
Should I install the total defense disc also, or look for Malwarebytes?

I haven't used any beyond Windows Defender in years. The other stuff seems to cause more issues than it solves.
Malwarebytes is good for an occasional scan to remove spyware. I have used it on my mom's computer when she accidentally installs some sort of toolbar or something.

Malwarebytes free is good...
The paid version sometimes causes issues...
Freezes and lockups...
The real-time scanning and schedules...
If these things happen disable the program and test...
Have not had the issue with HitManPro/Alert...

I never, never, never would use McAfee again.
In Windows 7, I use the Windows Security Essentials, scan occasionally with the free malwarebytes and superantispyware.
I've been to some rough neighborhoods without problems

Same here, been using Microsoft Security Essentials for a number of years, no problems.larryfoster wrote:In Windows 7, I use the Windows Security Essentials
You have to be vigilant when installing almost any product, even those you have paid for. As you click through the Continue screens there may be a little unobtrusive pre-checked box to install McAfee or some other "free trial". If you don't uncheck the box, the garbage gets loaded, then it's hard or impossible to uninstall depending on the quality of the uninstaller. Nasty, nasty trick.
