Typing on a phone takes way more time since Tuesday's storm killed two computers on me. One I think will need a board and CPU but the other may not. Looking for a RAM for an xw6600 workstation to test with. It's a 4gb X 2 DDR2. Just want to find out if its a RAM issue like HP says or the board got smoked.
Thanks guys.
Thanks guys.

Update, by removing one stick of RAM I can get it to come alive but only if I first pull a fan power...weird. Plug it back in once booted and it's fine. Music plays. It always said I had a problem with #4 memory but F1 would bypass it. I pulled and reset all sticks and now the problem is 1 stick missing( that I removed to test) and now #3 memory problem.
Still all in all I'm happy tonight even with the main computer cooked.

I never trust a 'puter once hit by lightning...
Every time i work on one that has had a surge to it of some sort...
And it has "issues" and it "kinda sorta works"...
I regret it...
That said...
Usually slots 1 & 3 then 2 & 4 are paired...
basic trouble shooting...
swap a 'good' stick to a bad slot and see if it is still good...
then the bad stick to a good slot...
This what you have with the 8 memory slots...
RAM
Memory Speed
667 MHz
Memory Specification Compliance
PC2-5300
Features
fully buffered, registered

Been servicing systems for almost 40 years, sent a PM to help you. I always see students/faculty that want to talk with an expert, I say " I will try to help you until one shows up"

Well here's where I am today guys. Trying my patience with about a '99 vintage Windows XP. Man, this thing is SLOWWWWWW...
Comcast was here today, fixed my problems on their end. Burnt up a splitter and maybe some connectors. Net, phone, and TV are back on so at least the wife will be happy.
On the downside I didn't lose my modem but did the router. My brain says the modem should be junk as it's prior to the router but what do I know. Also found out my garage computer(HP xw6600 Workstation), the one I will focus on mainly until parts come for the house one, isn't seeing any ethernet connection, nor is the modem when the two are hooked together. Tried other cables as well and finally got this dinosaur running on ethernet so it's definitely the computer.
The garage 'puter is the one that is having RAM issues on startup but will boot after an F1 push. Was just reading around about what to do for a workaround or fix for ethernet but I'm beginning to think an old work buddy was right about me, my mind is a hard drive and it's full.
So you smarter guys if you would tell me what you think. I really hate to throw this one out after seeing what's inside of it. Someone really liked this computer, liquid cooled CPUs, many extra fans, extra HDD, lotsa RAM (that most works). I can take pics of anything inside if it will help to tell me which direction to go.
As for the house one (Dell D16M with I5 3.20GHz), I have a CPU on it's way to try. If that don't do it I'll buy something else I guess. We mostly use it for email, videos, and banking. No game use or anything more strenuous.
Thanks!
( I did try whacking everything with a hammer but some things just don't care I guess)

I had to scrap a nice Dell after a lightning strike...damaged something on the motherboard.
Switched to mostly cheapo units afterwards and haven't had another strike.

new Comcast modem has built in router and 4 port switch...
At least in SE MA...
replace router with dumb switch if router was remote from modem...
Your HP workstation specs can be improved with a newer used workstation...
I have Dell laptops as old as your work station running win 7 and 4 GB ram...
But have a good SSD in them and they run well for a basic home office work station...
They are backup machines at this point...
But even the new laptop is 5 years old...
Again SSD and maximized the ram...

Can you recommend a "good SSD"? Or are they all pretty much the same?CapeCoaler wrote: ↑Fri. Jul. 20, 2018 7:41 amI have Dell laptops as old as your work station running win 7 and 4 GB ram...

I have an older Dell desktop with 4 GB RAM, running Windows Vista. I would like to extend its life by installing an SSD and Windows 7 -- though I fear the upgrade cost might be more than just buying a refurbished desktop with Win 10.

Try Linux first. Its free and if all you need it for is web browsing its just as good as Windows. Its working (editing) with pics and videos that Windows is better at. Linux doesnt need much room and you can operate it alongside your vista is you wanted too.rberq wrote: ↑Fri. Jul. 20, 2018 9:00 amCan you recommend a "good SSD"? Or are they all pretty much the same?

Agreed. Mint Linux is the distro I would suggest.warminmn wrote: ↑Fri. Jul. 20, 2018 9:15 amTry Linux first. Its free and if all you need it for is web browsing its just as good as Windows. I bought a refurbished HP SSD drive on eBay for our old laptop, it made a hell of a difference in the responsiveness.

specs almost as good as the 860 pro but cheaper...
I would go with a refurbished win 10 computer if it touches the internet or some flavor of Linux...
Win 7 out of support 2020...

Well the garage machine is up and running thanks to Kevin (2001Sierra). No offense to anyone else offering help, I have a hard time trying to be patient with computers and it's easier to stick with one person at a time so as not to get confused.
This machine may be old but theres many a good part in it so I wanted to see this one function again. So far, so good. Going to give it some time to see if it's stable then get a PCI card for it. That function was hit as well so no net other then the phone.
Know what really ticks me off? My Bose 4401 preamp muat have taken a shot as well. Very low volume out so it probably took out an op-amp. Thankfully there is a guy in France that has totally rebuilt his and graciously left the info up for all to see. Reckon that will be this winters project.
Oh yeah, this computer already has an SSD along with the regular HHD, liquid cooled cpus, and a bunch of other goodies inside. IIRC the guy I bought it from said they did imaging work or something. Should keep me in tunes for the rest of my life.
Also bought 2 surge protectors that will be here tomorrow. No more of this lightening stuff.

Make sure you surge the ethernet port also...
