Keeping the barrel full and the lid on it is your best bet, never heard anybody venting the barrel but that would be extra safe.

I wonder if a barrel vent wouldn't actually cause more of a problem because now you have a more negative pressure in the drum caused by the draft of the vent.

Good point stoker man. Concidering I had coal only about 6" above the auger once and no fumes out of the barrel I will not bother with venting the lid. Only once I had fumes when the obstruction caused the feed tube to run dry. All better now.
