Just reaching out .. I'm at the 50% point of the nut coal I bought from Rella at $365/ ton.

Rella wants $485/ton plus $175 delivery....

Bethlehem is at $480/ton plus $135 delivery.

Every time I call Rella there is aways some Sarcastic remark.

Folks at Bethlehem seemed pleasant...

Has anybody used their coal?

Thanks

As a fellow Long Islander I know your struggle. Not much choice in cold dealers for us folk! I’ve been using Rella for years. Their customer service was a bit rough in the beginning, but I noticed as a repeat customer they’ve warmed up a bit. I don’t really care for the old man, he seems to always be miserable. John the delivery guy and his wife are great people. I tried Bethlahem one year and had a horrible experience. They were hard to get a hold of, never returned my phone calls. The delivery kept getting delayed. They didn’t really have the right equipment to make the delivery. It was actually a landscape company that made the delivery, weird? I ordered a few pallets of bagged coal and they wound up putting the forks through some of the bags when moving the pallets. I had coal spill everywhere. They use weaved bags, not solid plastic. They were crap and fell apart within the season. Bethlahem was a bit cheaper than Rella, but not worth the headache. First and last time I used them.

I called Rella looking for a price on bagged and the above pretty much sums it up! :baby:
Years ago I vowed never to use them again. My recent call instantly reminded me why.

After leaving Rella, I used Bethlehem for many years, 1st when Ron owned it, now a cousin of his.

When Tractor Supply opened, I discovered bagged coal - which also coincided with me getting a wood stove.
So now I run the DVC-500 on low, with the wood stove taking up the rest. Wood is sooo cheap here on Long Island.

Problem is, TSC is out of coal (their website still shows you can order LOL) So I am definitely calling Bethlehem. I'm hoping that as Tcalo says, it's in woven bags, my DVC hates wet coal.

$160 split & delivered - semi green - so you need to order in spring. Or keep a stockpile...

Tree companies will dump logs free of charge - been there done that - lots more work.
At $160 - its not worth it

Its much easier to keep an even heat with coal though.

Tree companies will deliver logs free of charge - been there done that - lots more work.
That's cheap? :no1: although I haven't checked for delivery in quite some time. Couple years ago was half that up here. Well, how much are you talking?

Is that a full cord, or face, or half cord ?

full 4x4x8 cord, "semi-seasoned" split & delivered - cheaper than coal or pellets, much more work & space needed though.

Insects are the main problem with wood. On the other hand, over the years, I've encountered pretty much everything in my coal bin as well. Camel back (cave) crickets are the best, attract rodents.

That is cheap. It was averaging $200.00 a cord back before I moved from Amityville to upstate in '92. Rare to hear of anyone using their fireplace or a wood stove, even after the oil embargo of the late 1970's.

I used coal because it was so much cheaper than wood back then.

Wow, that'd be great. A load of firewood logs costs close to $1000 in the Binghamton area..

Man at that cost I ought to go cut all the dead ash trees I have in my woods and haul them up your way!

The ash borer will make its way nation wide over the next few years I haven't seen a live ash tree in my area of PA in years.
The ash is following in the same steps as the American chestnut. A non native being will kill them all, sad to say.

I took down the ones that could hit the house last winter, stacked the logs. Nice and dry now but I still rather buy coal.
