I prefer ash for kindling. Catches easy and makes good coals. Ours are on they way out, it happens fast. 3 years ago only a few.dead ash in my woods. Last summer everything under 6" diameter was dead except for new saplings.

Also not allowed to travel more than 50 miles from their source (in NY).
Not that it has stopped the Ash Borer. Every mature ash tree I see today is completely dead. The young ones are riddled with holes and probably will be dead in a year or two, though I hear they are slightly more capable of surviving.

Yes. Old timers in my town said the main streets here were lined with elm trees and all were wiped out when the Dutch elm disease got here.WIburnerPaul wrote: ↑Fri. Mar. 10, 2023 10:52 pmYears ago in WI, there was ‘Dutch Elm disease’. Did that occur anywhere else?
Some of the trees wiped out by disease and bugs will hopefully make a comeback.
There is a state farm just west of here that is trying to grow disease-resistant Chesnut trees and they have had some success. My oldest BIL was part of a similar project in Stockbridge Mass. Hopefully they can do the same for ash trees as they have been pretty well wiped out here.
