I suspect the biggest reason that Exxon made a decent profit last year was the government canceling pipelines and just about all drilling leases causing the huge price increases to all things fossil fuel related. Huge price increases cheered on by the far left socialists and greenies.

The cost to extract fossil fuels is somewhat static. Back in the days of the Marcellus Shale gas rush, gas companies would tell me that anything over $4/mmcf was basically guaranteed profit. Anything beyond that was gravy.
So, fossil fuel prices go up, profits of extraction companies go up as well.
