Anthracite Price Per Ton for the 2022-2023 Heating Season

Went to the local yard for black rocks.

He said the next load he gets is going up
$55 more a ton. Using a broker add another $45 to the $55.

Filling the bin on Sunday. While still @ $300 bulk loose.

Local dealer sent out I guess you’d say preorder pricing… basically we have til end of April to get a price of 395/ton and take delivery around that time as well.
Semi tempted to hold out and see if it drops any further in the summer. It was at 445/ton a couple months ago.
Any thoughts?

I got a ton today. $465, bagged Blascak. I dumped it into my bin. Looks really good, no fines, nice size, no complaints. The bags may please some of you better now. The handle is stronger and there are tiny holes in the bags to drain them better. Its for next year to use in cold spells.

That's the non-delivered price by me. Been the same for months...no lowering of prices.

I got about 800 lbs of coal on hand. Hope I make it to the end.

I haven't heard of any dealer dropping their price $50. That's pretty good.

Its going up over last years price here too and im right in the middle of anthracite country. Went up about $60 a ton from last October to now. From $265 at the breaker to $325 . Add another $35-$50 ton for delivery

Coal and oil still going up Nat gas still going down. Nat Gas $2.10

That would have been me, I'm assuming. I'm cutting margins to un-maintainable levels to offer this sale, in hopes we can keep the majority of our customers burning until pricing comes down on it's own. I do not see any additional drop in pricing this year, and we've already sold over 1,000ton at the reduced price. Fingers crossed I'm even going to be able to get all of that here, before we get an increase notice. I'd order now and take it ASAP while it's available, no other dealers around here are even getting reductions. I'll never mislead anyone, I said the same thing about ordering early the last two years, and anyone that took advantage of it saved heavily.

I dont think its going down folks. If its still going up in springtime here in central pa ,right at the source in the heart of anthracite country,i dont see why it would go down farther out . Plus now with oil going back up which means Diesel is going back up too. Plenty of export opportunities for coal as well at high prices. Plus Some Coal companies have contracts with their biggest customers locked in for 2 yrs out at last years high prices. At least thats the news on my coal company stock dividend payouts. Payouts are twice what they were 1 year ago.

I also am a pessimist about Anthracite prices going down. I've read or heard about a couple of collieries or breakers that went up not long ago. Jeddo supposedly went up about $40 or $50 a ton, but they were at $200/ton before. That 500k tons a year of Russian anthracite that US steel makers used before isn't coming back. Many other reasons as well. US is way down the list for anthracite exports but that's where the money is. Some of the small breakers hopefully will still have some down to earth prices, but there aren't a lot of licensed breakers left in Pa.

Heating oil is lower than gasoline wholesale for the first time in years. Dealer markup is still pretty high, but not the $2.25 a gal markup mega gouge of last Fall. I can get No. 2 HO at $3.25 gal at the moment. Paid $5.25/gal last Oct. My break-even coal to HO is oil at $3.10/gal. That's at the current $382/ton coal delivered for 4 ton minimum that my regular place is still at. The only other semi-local yard that advertises price, lists $410/ton delivered for bigger orders.

Been buying coal for all but a few of the last 45 years. I've nearly never seen it go down. Only time was about 10 years ago, when a large colliery lowered their breaker pick up price to $160 a ton when the going rate was $180. Most followed them and a few went under. They're now the highest priced.

Im hedging my bets and installing gas heat and hot water this summer. Ill still keep the coal boiler for backup and in case of high gas prices and for the 2 coldest months of winter. So ill get 2 tons instead of the usual 4 tons for the season. Right now Nat gas is dirt cheap at @$2.01 spot price.

the only options I have here are Coal, oil, and propane. I can put an oil gun in the efm 350 if need be (scrapper built it only 350 with oil option) i think there was also someone here running a efm on gas.
Had we known this was going to happen would have had a heat pump installed in 2020 rather than central a/c. We used to have a heat pump though and it was not very efficient.

Im planning to get a minisplit for Ac so may as well get a good one and do spot heat as well. Ill still need something bigger when it really gets cold though. For some reason Minisplits are more efficient than whole house heat pumps in general.

Coal didn't just Go up, the dollar went down. I think they would both have to reverse to change anything in the positive direction. It's not pessimistic to say that....we're in a recession and that means cutting some corners on spending to maintain our black rock addiction
