From your pic it looks like most DS shakers that are welded on the end. I'm thinking your weld broke and your slipping on friction now. I've never had a problem with crushing anything crushable as the shaker system is pretty stout. I'm wondering if they make that weld sacrificial to prevent breaking a grate or it was just faulty.
