I paid 170$ per ton at Direnzo coal near Pottsville PA. Highly reccomend that place great quality and clean coal. The coal I got from American premium in Tamaqua was 150$ at ton but very dirty with alot of fines and sopping wet. I will stick with Direnzo from now on.

Just picked up a ton of rice coal (loose) for $183 from Lehigh. I think it might have been 1.2 tons.
The last time I ventured out to Tamaqua I figured I'd try a different place that a friend of mine was using American Premium Coal right down the road. Not sure if I got a bad batch or what but the coal had like mulch mixed in. A lot of small pieces of wood? Not cool, I guess the pure coal got intercepted on its way from Columbia and they mixed it with something. Price was the same but the quality was not good. Went back to Lehigh, no quality issues there.

$312 a ton for one brand of nut or pea at a place 1.5 hrs from me at Hitzer stove shop.
$307 a ton for another brand of nut or pea from the same shop.
Local TSC 8 miles away $349.50 a ton for nut/rice. Hoping to catch the sale for $5 bag.
I burned just a few bags shy of a ton last season plus 150 gallons of fuel oil. I have a ton of nut left. Likely enough for the worst part of the winter when I start burning my coal...Dec-Mar. Instead of fuel oil this year I'll be getting into my stash of 3year seasoned wood for shoulder season burns.
I may just grab half a ton and call it good for this winter and save my money for buying more bulk come next May. That way I have a little extra coal left if I need it. I also have 2 cords of wood and full fuel oil tank as a last resort...electric and kerosene heaters if I should need those. I shall remain warm one way or another.

That it is not a lot of BTU's over a winter. Your house must heat pretty easily. Assuming you can move the heat from the Hitzer around the house, coal is still very competitive with current fuel pricing.Hoytman wrote: ↑Mon. I threw this table together to compare my local coal pricing to other options. Pretty much the same info as the coalpail calculator, just presented differently.

Fuel Cost Comparison.png
I studied that chart a bit.
In order to get the same 25,000,000 btu’s (total) I used from coal out of my fuel oil furnace...if my math was correct...I should only need 180 gallons (total) of fuel oil to equal 25,000,000 btu’s (total).
(That is, comparing btu’s for the same time period Dec-Mar ...btu’s and time being equal.)
Like I said, I only burned 150 gallons for both shoulder seasons and it cost me $450...so my total money spent for the winter was $750. I know if I burn wood or coal staring in October and go through May I can still heat for less than $750...and maybe between $450-$550.
Like I said...before coal one winter I spent north of $2500 for fuel oil. So, apparently the fuel oil either isn’t as efficient as my furnace man says...OR...the uninsulated duct work in the crawl space could be robbing a lot of energy. Unless I am looking at that chart wrong it should have only required about 180 gallons of fuel oil. I already know that isn’t possible during those months.
My stove is centrally located in the middle of our home and I do use one ceiling fan about 8 feet from the stove and a floor box fan about 12-15 feet away from the stove blowing cold air from bedrooms towards the stove. Works very well...and this big Hitzer is barely running even in the heart of winter. That’s why I can’t use it in the shoulder season without window stats. I prefer not to waste fuel if I can. Which is why I wish I had a 30-95 or a 254 instead of this 354.
Plus...as KingCoal said in another thread, I get the benefit of radiant heat sinking into my floor and walls, furniture, etc., that I don’t get with fuel oil...floor is always cold with the oil heat.
