Buying coal has become a real pain on long Island ny. I bought about 2 tons of nut in bags from tractor supply in Medford and a friend transported to western nassau by the queens boarder. On Friday I tried to order 2 tons but was told all they could do is give me a rain check and hope that the warehouse gets some and ships to the store...but don't hold your breath as others are also waiting ....
After much research I found a coal dealer in Brooklyn with a yard. Don't know if anyone on this forum has bought from them. I spoke to them and went to their yard this afternoon. They had rice, pea & stove coal currently in their yard . I bought 4 bags of stove coal to try out in my SF260 that heats my garage / shop & 3000 sq ft house . I was told They deliver. I got a quote for $315 / ton bulk ... Weirfield Coal Company 386 Weirfield St, Brooklyn, NY 11237 (718) 497-1212

I knew in the late 90’s about 25% of the schools in NYC still burned coal. Then the clean air act passed in 1996 and all of the boiler/furnaces where changed to national gas.

I have a friend that lived in Williamsburg, Brooklyn from about early 80's to early 90's. He heated and cooked with mostly coal and some wood. I think that he was able to get some coal delivered back then. Or maybe he picked up small amounts with a pickup locally.
I know that most of the PA. state owned universities and hospitals heated with mostly coal along with oil and gas up until the 90's. I've forgotten the tonnage that Kutztown University would burn in year but it was impressive.
