I would love to pay that I heat my home with coal because I’m frugal and love the challenge but when it gets more expensive than oil I got to give it up

Just for the heck of it I just ran the numbers on my heat;
Coal at $270 / Ton and 70% efficiency was $1542.86 per million btu,
Oil #2 at $2.70 / gallon and 75% efficency was $2575.92 per million,
My electricity at $0.14 per kwh at 100% was $4103.17 per million,
and through my heat pump when above 15F at 250% was $1641.27 per million.
So coal was still the leader, and I expect my efficiency is slightly better then 70% but we keep the house warmer then 68F by several degrees with the coal.
What is surprising is the heat pumps till it gets real cold outside, that $100 per million btu is easy to spend instead of the coal and ash work.

I’m in Eastern PA. I paid $253 a ton in the summer. That included free delivery and using a conveyor to get coal from the truck to my bin. I can easily hold 4 ton, so I’ve gotten over 3 tons each of the last two seasons. The price goes up during the heating season (I know because I called my first year in the house when I was almost out of coal). If you have the room to store it, early ordering is the way to go. The previous owner of the house built the bin, but they would go get the coal in their pickup each month and shovel it themselves. Not high on my list of things to do. Ha ha.

I try to do some basic cost comparisons with my hand-fired coal stove and using #2 fuel oil in the hydronic system. I think that DS claimed 80% efficiency on the coal stove, but I expect it's no more than 40-50%. My small New Yorker oil boiler claims 86% efficiency and was tested out to that figure on two occasions. I've been paying from $2.40 to $2.60 a gal. for oil over the past year or so. I think it's in that range right now. I have an indirect water heater off the boiler ( have been through hell with those things), so the boiler is used year round. No basement, so the oil tank is outside. With the ultra crap ULS diesel fuel being passed off for heating oil, I have the added expense of biocides, cold flow elixirs and dosing a bit with # 1 oil ( kerosene). Something in all that better have some lubricity additives or fuel pumps on the burner go on crap ULS. I figure that I'm currently saving about $700 with coal over the 5 to 6 months that I burn coal, with coal at about $205 a ton. I still have the shoulder heating months and year round hot water on the oil bill. The savings were far higher when oil was almost $4.00/gal. for some years, and almost no savings when oil was $1.50/gal.
In 1978, I used to get delivered rice from a not so cheap yard for about $46/ton. I believe you could get dump trailer loads from $25 to $35 a ton. The second oil embargo and hyper inflation the next year raised that quickly. Many, many more Anthracite mines and breakers back then.
