Avg Coal Usage

Hi, New To This. Just Purchased a Home in Shamokin, Pa with a coal Stove, I was wondering If anybody can Give Me About a average usage of Bags a week, Rice Coal #40, 90,000 BTU Coal stove, Home Approx 1000 Sq Ft and avg out side Temp of 32, and Inside of 70, Mine is Hot air, Just a ball Park would Be Fine, Just would Like and Idea of what i would be using ! Thanks in advance For Any Help !

My uneducated guess would be less than 2.5 tons per heating season. Probably closer to 2.... unless you like a hot house or it's drafty/ uninsulated...

80 pounds a day at 100 percent feed rate.
including the basement i am heating approx 2800 sq ft.....insulation is so so, lots of drafts, 28 yr old windows are bad and are taped shut, no insulation in crawl space. I have reading allegheny stoker stove in the basement. i started adding insulation to the attic, about 1/3 done. thermostat is set downstairs at 73 degrees. it's 65-70 upstairs in my room.

i'm sure a boiler would cut that way back, but i would have to spend at least 4 grand between a used boiler and the plumbing and radiators. paid 350 dollars for my coal stove.....have three other stoker stoves in storage.

Hmmm! I have already went thru 2.5 tons in my DS1500 and had to order another pallet. My house is only 1500 sq feet. It's using a lot more than I expected considering the house is only at 68 degrees . Just recently it has gotten cold. When it gets below 20 degrees outside I turn the propane furnace on to supplement. As much as I like the coal route , I am beginning to think it was a mistake.

Welcome Vinnie, im in Coal Township so possibly just a few blocks away. I dont use Bagged coal ,too expensive. I get 3 to 4 ton of rice delivered For $200 aTon, all at once in the fall and usually use about 3 ton for the whole season. Or a little more if its colder than usual like this year. I used around 2 ton so far this season.So im thinking about 6 bags a week avg. 10 -11 when its very cold. Im keeping a 3000SF of 100 yr old house to 76 degrees all winter and i bump it up to 78 on the very coldest days ,like now. House is partially insulated with blown in cellulose in most of the walls.

1100 sg ft house upstairs, stove in half finished basement and door to garage opened everynite and almost all day on weekends 40 lbs per day.

no reason to buy bagged coal in shamokin unless you have no coal bin.
lots of good coal nearby. it's probably 170 a ton picked up.

I’m sorry to hear that. I don’t know anything about a DS1500, but I wonder if it’s a stove issue rather than a coal issue? I’m able to keep 4500+sqft in the upper 70’s with two hand fed stoves each eating 40lbs a day. I don’t use the electric heat at all.

I know a lot of it has to do with the stove being located in the Basement however I would think the DS1500 would do a better job considering it is sized for a larger home.

How much wood did you go through in a normal year? I am curious how much coal you expected to burn. I usually use between 4 - 5 tons per year a little larger house but probably in a slightly warmer area.

It is hard to say how much wood we burned as it came off our property and neve really measured it. I would say 4 - 6 chords of wood on the average. I really did not know how much coal I was going to burn however I was led to believe a bag a day for the square footage. Of course that's what I get for believing a Salesman lol

The basement is a giant heat sink...
It will eat a lot of btu's...
The 'rents house was heated with a Hitzer 503 in the 1st floor fireplace...
2300 sq feet, 1978 level insulation Anderson 400's for windows on The Cape...
Just shy of 4 tons kept it 72*...
Without the oil boiler running...
The basement got cold...
About half of the basement was insulated the balance bare poured concrete...
I installed a Harman MKII to take the chill off wanted to get it to 66-68*...
I ran it for 2 weeks burning 50lbs of coal per day...
Managed to keep it at 65*...
