I whipped up and attached a quick spreadsheet to assist you in estimating your actual price paid per ton of coal given the miles traveled (round trip) to pick up the coal, the amount of coal picked up, the average MPG of your vehicle during the trip, and the price for diesel or gasoline.

If you have been undecided as to traveling further for coal in order to get it at a lower price, this spreadsheet will tell you if you are actually getting it at a better price or not.

Very Nice!! Thanks Larry!

It added about $10 / ton for my trip to the dealer getting one ton at a time. That is useful info to compare to the cost to get a dump truck load at a time.

I should add in the $4.50 cost of the breakfast sandwich and chocolate milk that I always get at the "Safety Stop" on the way back to make sure the load is secure!! :stfu:

The spreadsheet also does not apply wear and tear factors for tire wear and overall vehicle wear. If I knew what factors to apply here, I could add them in.

At 270,000 miles on the truck I'll just figure that has been depreciated out the ying yang already!!

How does 3/4 of a cent per mile sound for typical tire wear related depreciation?

Should be close to realistic tire wear cost. I just paid $250 for two new Coopers and hope to get 40000 out of them. The other two were closer to $100 per tire since I came across some very lightly used ones and they have been on over 50k miles.

Sooo... you're telling me my 1300 mile round trip to Kentucky to get a hundred pounds of bit might not be the most lucrative thing I ever did? :annoyed:

It all depends on if you buy a winning lottery ticket during the trip.
