Something else that no one is talking about much right now unless you are directly involved with trucking is the diesel price right now. I don’t really recall what the price was last year at this time but it was indeed quite a bit lower. I get a better rate on fuel that is delivered to our own storage tank at the yard than you can buy at the pump, and I did not look at last weeks delivery but I’m sure it’s over $3.50 or so.

I don’t think we are going to see a return to the high water mark of around $5 anytime soon like we did in 2011 but regardless, surcharges will have an effect.

Perhaps by this time next year I will have traded in my oil slobbering, fuel gulping Caterpillar powered Peterbilt for one of Barney’s Tesla or Nikola coal haulers that is scheduled for production this coming Fall.

Okay I have weighed these options very carefully and with much consideration... on second thought you people will just have to deal with higher trucking costs for your coal. 8-)

I did bring up the fuel in the very beginning, and like I said, fuel is not the factor in the 720 dollar rise in trucking cost for me. Fuel would have to have gone from 3.50 a gallon up to almost 8 dollars a gallon for the cost increase to make sense.

I am lookin for other trucking options, I just wanted to bring it up that it seems the trucking cost has had a huge increase and I don’t see why, even if fuel went up 2 dollars per gallon and ELDs are costing more, I just can’t see it costing 700 more a load.

Quote too high because you don’t want to do the job, maybe that’s the case?

If you could get the guys in Northern PA to buy chicken manure, we would be all set.

As I said earlier it is my estimation that it isn’t all diesel fuel. It is fuel, it is the electronic logs, but more importantly it is truck supply and demand..

Sorry HB, forgot that fuel costs was discussed earlier on. At any rate $700.00 more does seem like a bit of a stretch. Haul rates in general have gone up in the last year or so but that’s a little bit wild.

It has to be the loss of a backhaul.

Just want to put in my 2 cents. As a small fleet owner. I have 6 trucks. Tankers. So i can't speak 100% on dump trailers. Only thing i will say is dump trailer rates are low. As far as increase in costs. There is alot of factors in trucking. Running a truck up and down the road is not cheap. And profit margins are thin.
Insurance is a big cost. For my 6 trucks i pay. 45,300 in commercial auto, 2,200 for General Liability. Workmans comp on 5 drivers avg. 14,000 a year.
My tires avg. 400.00 a piece. Brake jobs are 2,000. Oil changes 350.00. My drivers avg. 55 to 70k a year. Medical insurance for my drivers runs 25,000 a year.
Lets not forget truck and traiker payments. A new tractor runs $140,000. New dump trailer is $70,000. Registration is 2,100 a truck.
If anything rates need to still come up. Problem is trucks have been working cheap for too long. Now people are used to it.

Depends. Im local and avg about 1,200 a day to the truck. Some days i can do over 2k. Some days i do 350.00 bucks lol. When i bid work. I try to get 4.50+/loaded mile. Since i run tanks, we dont do back hauls.

1,872,000 per year isn’t that bad...

Even if your operating cost is 1,000,000 per year....

life is good...
