I happen to know they range between 5,000 and 7,000 btu depending on the manufacturer.
That is if you lab test them in an oxygen bomb calorimeter.

Well then......
I suppose since coal is at such a high price ... it likely is worth all the danger & hassle of burning the shingles inside your home to reap those lower btu tar pieces..

Did a lot of BTU testing and when bored I would test a lot of materials. Many food products list the calories per gram on the packaging. One you know the calories per gram you can convert that to btus per gram then grams to pounds.
