I make the trip every year and there are some very steep hills going to Tamaqua. I had 11.3 ton on my dually and holding it wide open going up those long grades I could only get it up to 35mph. I enjoy the hills however, I live in some very flat country and it's cool to see the terrain. If you just take it easy you should be fine!jschaefer7406 wrote: ↑Tue. Jan. 02, 2018 7:58 pmThanks, Matt. Like I said, not worried at all as long as it doesn’t freeze into a block during the drive back.
To those who have traveled to Lehigh from I-80; what’s the terrain like between 80 and the breaker? I usually go 54 to 901 to the normal spot, and the truck doesn’t particularly care for the long hills. Trip to Lehigh any better, or?
Thanks,
Joe

11.3 tons on a single axle pickup is a lot. Even for a 550 with G rated 19.5" tires which is about ~ 15,580 per axle with 4 tires. I hope you werent driving far lol. Thats also quite the bed.swyman wrote: ↑Mon. Jan. 08, 2018 3:16 pmI make the trip every year and there are some very steep hills going to Tamaqua. I agree. Maybe he meant on a trailer behind the dually? Even then, not sure what dually on the market would pull that kind of weight.
My dump is a GMC 3500HD, but is more like a 4500 or 5500 series truck. Has 10 lug axles, and G-rated 19.5s. I only bring back 3 ton at a time, and it pretty much fills the 10’x7 dump box at that. Would REALLY have to build the sides up, and even then would never get 11 tons.
3 in mine, plus the 8600lb curb weight, comes in just under the 15k GVW.

I could hold 6 tons in my Kodiak 7500. I would not attempt to pull another 5 and it had 3116 CAT.

Yeah, 6 tons in a Kodiak with a Cat sounds about right
But yeah, 11.3 surely must’ve been a typo?

Just how it was worded. Even so with what people call a dually, and a trailer, 11 ton of payload isn't really an option. We're going through all this at work with licensing and stuff, it's the only reason it was on my mind.hotblast1357 wrote: ↑Mon. Jan. 08, 2018 6:20 pmHe doesn’t put the 11 ton in the bed of his truck! My diesel dually weighs 8k, my 12k dump is in the 3,200 range. Which puts me in the scale at 11,200. Add 22,000 to that and were at 33,400. That's a different class of truck in my opinion. God help him if he gets stopped by DOT. What I do is risky, but not that risky lol. That's grossing at 24k. Just my .02

I believe he hauls it on a gooseneck, with ibc totes I think? 11 ton is really not that bad on a proper trailer with a one ton dually. Your standard half ton pick up tows a standard 10,000 pound car trailer? That’s about half.

As long as your not over your GVWR and tire ratings, and have the proper class license, there is no issue.Mikeeg02 wrote: ↑Mon. Jan. 08, 2018 7:45 pmJust how it was worded. Oh and he wouldn’t get stopped by DOT as he is not in commerce, only way is of attention is drawn to him or it looks dangerous.

Agreed all around, Mike.
I didn’t believe 11.3 for a second, in the bed or behind. Was trying to be polite and not flat out call the guy a liar, so I asked about the trailer lol.
I’m only licensed class 5 (14k), and usually come back right around 15k give or take. Beast doesn’t even look loaded with 3 ton though, so no reason to be hassled. Like you said, there’s risk and then there’s RISK.

I’d certainly like to see a Ram pulling 30,000!
Is that a 5500 I’m assuming, because below it also says 3500 is 14k GCWR?

It was a little much for my trailer tires, blew one in the first 150 miles but was good the rest of the 500 mile each way trip. Last year I was just a touch over 10 ton, this year I topped off each tote and was over 11. The truck handled it great but not enough tire. Truck is rated at 39,200lb gross which last year I was 39,600 and went perfect. This year I was 41,060 and proved to much.
