I started burning coal in the 2007-2008 season. At that time I was paying $175 a ton bulk. Even with more coal dealers in my area the going price currently 2016-2017 season is $260 a ton bulk. And around $320 bagged. It seems as it gets more popular the price goes up. I don't think the price at the breaker has gone up that much. Does it really cost that much to truck it here? 260 miles. Has anyone else noticed a price increase?

No, not around here. Been 190-210 bulk for years, 20 more per ton for special delviery

This year my coal was the cheapest since 2007.

Mines been around $210-230/ton bulk for the past 5 years. hasn't changed much. same this year as it was the past 2 years. Just got it on Wed. delivered.

even in the coal region we had a price spike back around 2010,,,,,, $180 to $200 a ton bulk picked up, now $160

Coal may fluctuate in price in small increments, like anything else part of it is supply and demand. Also if oil prices climb this will generally push prices up due to all the fuel used to mine and the fuel to ship. The nice thing is it is not nearly as volatile in price as oil and natural gas. Wood pellets are a relatively new fuel and those prices have changed significantly in the few years they were being produced. If your prices seem too high in a certain area it is probably due to one of two things or a combination of the two. Not enough competition in an area is a large aspect, also not enough people burning can be another aspect. If someone has to have their product laying for a long period of time they have to charge more to make money. Floor (or ground space) costs money.. So tell your friends to buy stoves so more people want to handle coal in your area!

I paid 170 per ton this year for pea, got a tractor load bulk though, so no its not necessarily the trucking thats the expensive part, its a third party having it in stock and selling it to you, I am over 6 hours away from coal country,

If I were to buy bulk locally its around 275 per ton, and to buy bagged the cheapest is around 320 per ton.

The closest yard to me dropped prices this year for bulk from 185 to 160. They sell it by the bucket at $3 per 5 gallon bucket. I can heat my house for a week and spend only $15. Then again my house is a 1895 patch house at 985 sq foot also. It was built to be heated with a coal stove and a kitchen coal fired cook stove. I have the coal stove but not the kitchen stove. Maybe another year or so and I might look into that. I also have an oil fired hot water heating boiler in the basement as backup. A tank of oil lasts me two years or more depending on if I get sick during the winter or decide to take a trip.

Pretty much stayed the same here for 3-4 yrs. $200.00 per--picked up. Beats the hell out of fuel oil/kero in this drafty 200 yr old farm house. Heatin about 1800 sq with portions closed up for the winter. 3 ton per season no matter the weather--BLASCHAK nut
